The Speech courses in the Speech and Theatre Program are, as a part of the Communication Department, offers more than 40 courses designed to improve understanding of the human communication process and to develop proficiency in many types of communication to the performing arts.

  • In addition to the major programs in speech and theatre, the program offers two minors in the area of speech: speech communication and speech pathology. Speech courses complement other major course of study and are a fundamental element of a well-rounded general education
  • The speech communication minor is a good supplement for any major. This minor degree places emphasis on the human communication process and enhancement of related fields including public speaking, speech competition, human resources, public relations, politics, and the media.
  • Speech language pathology is within the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders and consists of diagnostic measures and therapeutic interventions in the areas of speech, language, voice, and/or swallowing.  As a part of the minor degree, Northwestern offers the basic speech pathology courses including Phonetics, Language & Speech Development, and Communication Disorders.  These courses can be taken as directed electives in the area of Communication and Humanities for general education requirements and are appropriate for students preparing to work with children in any capacity.  In addition, these courses can assist a student with determining if speech pathology is the field of interest.
  • Northwestern Oklahoma State University currently offers a minor in the area of speech pathology.  This program prepares students to pursue further education in the area of Communication Sciences and Disorders.  In order to be licensed and certified as a speech pathologist, one must have a master’s degree from an accredited university.  The amount of coursework required to complete a master’s degree is based on the amount of coursework in speech pathology and related fields taken at the undergraduate level.  In addition, a minor in speech pathology complements any major preparing students to work with children.

A beginning course in American Sign Language is also offered.

Since 1969, the Speech program has hosted tournaments for area high school students. Currently, three tournaments are hosted annually including the OSSAA Regional Speech and Debate Tournament, the NWOSU High School Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament, and the OSSAA Regional High School One Act Competition. Community members, upper level students, and faculty serve as judges and timekeepers in all the tournaments.
