College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Northwestern offers college credit for specific subjects through the College Level Examination program (CLEP).  CLEP provides a reliable and effective means for gaining credit, exemption, and placement.  The CLEP exams represent courses typical of the first two years of college study.  The specific exams offered by Northwestern are listed at the bottom of this webpage.

CLEP Policy

Northwestern Oklahoma State University is a limited test center that tests only its own students.  To be eligible a student must have fewer than 70 semester hours and be a current student at Northwestern.

In the event of a passing grade on a CLEP exam, the neutral grade of "S" and regular credit in the course are recorded on the student's record.  In the event of a lower than passing grade, no grade is recorded, and the student is not permitted to retake the examination.  Credit from CLEP exams is to be validated by the completion of at least 12 hours in one semester's residence at Northwestern.

CLEP exams are subject to the policy of the Advanced Standing Examination Program as stated in the Undergraduate Catalogue, Section V Advanced Standing.  The catalogue is available through Northwestern's website: www.nwosu.edu.

Location:
CLEP exams are given on the Alva campus in the Academic Success Center, located in the Industrial Education Building, Room 105.

The Exam Process:
CLEP exams are given on the computer.  They are fixed-length, 90-minute exams; allow 2 hours for the entire testing process.

Cost & Payment:
Each CLEP exam costs $92.00 total, with $20.00 paid to Northwestern Oklahoma State University prior to testing, and $72.00 paid to CLEP at the time of the exam. CLEP prefers credit card payment but will accept check or money order. The Freshman Composition with Essay requires an additional $10.00 payment to CLEP for the essay portion of the test.

Test Results:
Because the CLEP exam is given on the computer, score reports are available immediately after the exam is completed.  For Freshman Composition with Essay, the Essay portion is taken later and scored separately, with a delay of several weeks for the combined score.

Scheduling a Test Date:
To make arrangements to take a CLEP exam, call Joanne Prewett at 327-8149 and schedule a day to test.  For admission to the test you will need your receipt of payment to NWOSU, credit card (or check or money order) for payment to CLEP, a government-issued ID, and one other form of identification.
