Welcome to the Northwestern Fine Arts Department!
The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Fine Arts program has a strong history of excellence and distinction. The long-standing reputation of our program is a point of pride, and the strengths in performance provide depth to our students' experiences. A student at Northwestern is able to choose from and learn a broad range of musical interests, theatre training, and artistic pursuits, making Northwestern one of the best places to enter professional training in the arts.
Northwestern offers a small campus that is both nurturing and supportive. Concerts and theatre productions are presented in several venues on and off campus, rehearsals occur throughout every day, creative activity such as composing, master classes, and small ensemble training are at the very heart the Fine Arts program. We are dedicated to excellence, and committed to students' development as artists.
Northwestern faculty is professionally engaged regionally, nationally, and internationally—experience that they bring back to the classroom, the rehearsal, or the lesson. Faculty members are actively involved in the community, helping to make Alva one of Oklahoma’s cultural havens. In addition, class sizes are kept small and inviting.
The Fine Arts Building has evolved with the needs of students, and it is now a multifaceted building with a variety of rehearsal rooms, classrooms, offices/studios, practice rooms, labs, and gathering spaces. The computer and keyboard labs are frequently upgraded, and new technology is consistently added to the classrooms. Recently, rehearsal rooms have been refurbished, and all practice rooms remodeled. As of August 2012, all practice rooms and studios are equipped with new Yamaha pianos.
The Northwestern Recital Hall, part of the original building, is used for concerts, lectures, master classes, and rehearsals. Next door is Herod Hall. It is a magnificent space in which students, faculty, and guest artists perform for the campus and the public. With these facilities and collaborative partners, we have a suitable performance space for nearly any type of concert or production.
Visual arts studies at Northwestern are designed to enrich the life of the student artist. The emphasis in the program will prepare the student for advanced studies in the visual arts. In 2011, brand new facilities were created for studio art in the Jesse Dunn building, focusing on two-dimensional art, illustration, drawing, and painting.
Choosing Northwestern connects you to a distinguished list of alumni. The first person was placed on that list in 1897, and it has grown in quantity and significance ever since. The beautiful campus is an ideal environment for your training and development, and the faculty is focused on the student.
We look forward to welcoming you into our school as a student, parent, audience member or supporter. Your experience will be one that can change your life; visit us and get to know us, and you’re likely to agree.
