Blackboard: Navigating the Course Site

Note: To enable closed captioning of the videos, use Window Media Player and from the menu click Play, then Captions & Subtitles, and make sure "Captions" is selected.  Also, on the menu click View and make sure that "Full Mode" is selected.

After you have changed your Password and verified your E-Mail address, you will be taken back to your Bb Welcome Page.  On this page, the word "Welcome" is followed by the student's first name, as in the picture below.  On the right side of the screen is the My Courses pane, which lists the courses for which you have enrolled:

When you click one of the course links, you will see your online class.  The picture below shows what a particular online course looks like.  The left-column course content buttons take you into the various areas of the class site.  Keep in mind that the text on content buttons will vary from one course to another:

Below is a description of various course content areas that the professor establishes for a course.  Clicking on the course content buttons will take you to those areas:

Announcements Generally, this is the starting point for your course. This is where your instructor will make any announcements. You can choose to view announcements posted today or posted within the last 7 or 30 days.
Professor or Staff Information This button will take you to the staff information page where your can find a link to your professor's or instructor's e-mail address.
Syllabus or Course Information This is where you will typically find the course syllabus, due dates, objectives, etc.
Course Documents This is where you can find lecture notes, PowerPoint slide shows, handouts, etc.
Assignments This is where you can find your course assignments as well as any online quizzes or tests that your instructor may give.
Books/Bibliography  This area will typically contain a list of books for additional reading.
Discussion Board These buttons provide direct links to discussion questions.
Chat or Communication This is where you will find the communication tools such as the chat room, the discussion board and a place to send email.
Internet Links or External Links External Links (Internet Links) is where your instructor will post helpful web addresses for further study.
Tools This button will allow you to send and receive files through the Digital Dropbox and access your grades, calendar, and your personal homepage inside the course site.
Resources This button will forward you to the Academic Resources website.
Course Map This button will access a course site map.
