Director of Athletics
Andy Carter begins his first year as the Director of Athletics at Northwestern Oklahoma State Univesrity. Carter brings in more than 23 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, with the last 13 as the leader of an Athletics Department. He has spent more than eight years at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institution as the Director of Athletics.
Carter comes to Northwestern after serving as the Director of Athletics at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga., from June of 2009 until 2011. While at AASU, he supervised 11 varsity sports. In his first year, six of 11 programs earned NCAA Tournament appearances, with two regional championships and one national championship.
Prior to AASU, Carter served as the Director of Athletics at Newberry College in Newberry, S.C., for seven years. During his stint he increased the visibility and success of the Newberry athletic department, both on and off the competitive playing field. Under his direction, he led Newberry to 14 NCAA Championship appearances after the school had just one in the previous 11 seasons.
He developed the “Newberry College Athletic Initiative,” a long-term plan to improve Newberry’s athletic program while maintaining the school’s excellent academic record. Other highlights include the beginning of an intercollegiate wrestling program that finished second in NCAA Division II in 2009, conference champions in football in 2006 and 2008, as well as conference titles in women’s basketball and men’s golf.
Before arriving at Newberry, Carter served as the Director of Athletics at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, Mo., from 1997-2002. He served as the baseball coach from 1991-99 and led the team to seven straight conference titles.
Carter received his bachelor’s of science degree in business administration from Missouri Baptist in 1987, then earned his MBA from Lindenwood University (Mo.) in 1990.
Carter and his wife, Rena, have six children.
