The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee announced today that they have selected Tim Albin and the 1999 NAIA National Championship Football Team to be honored in ceremonies held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009.
Albin, originally from Woodward, was a player and coach for the Rangers. He was a first-team All-Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference selection as a wide receiver for three seasons and was the Rangers’ first player to earn All-District IX three times. He racked up 1,811 yards on 109 receptions from 1985-88.
After a coaching stint at Northeastern Oklahoma State University, Albin returned to Northwestern in 1994, when he served as the offensive coordinator. Albin was named the head coach in 1997 and served in that capacity through the 1999 championship season.
Albin turned out a 25-8 record in his three years as the head coach of the Rangers and was named the 1999 NAIA Football Coach of the Year by Rawlings and American Football Coach Magazine as he coached Northwestern to an undefeated 13-0 record.
Currently Albin is in his fourth season as the offensive coordinator at the University of Ohio.
The 1999 NAIA Championship Football Team won the school’s first NAIA National Championship, as they did so in a 34-26 win over Georgetown College (Ga.) on December 18, 1999 at Jim Carroll Stadium in Savannah, Tenn. Despite trailing 20-0 at the half, Northwestern put up 34 unanswered points to come from behind and take the win.
Six players from the squad earned NAIA All-American honors. The team was ranked first in the nation in rushing offense with 325.6 yards per game and second in total defense (219.0 yds./game) and rushing defense (37.5 yds./game).
Northwestern’s perfect 13-0 record proved to be the best in school history.
Albin and the team will be honored at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 14, and will be formally inducted at halftime of the Ranger men’s basketball game with Lubbock Christian University that afternoon.
The luncheon is open to the public, but reservations are required. The cost is $20 per person and reservations need to be made with the Alumni Association Office, (580) 327-8593 by Jan. 10. The event will be held in the University Cafeteria.
Players, coaches and trainers from the 1999 team should immediately contact Lizabeth Richey in the Alumni Association office at email@example.com or (580) 327-8594.
More information about the event will be released closer to the induction.
