GUINN AND CLICK JOIN SOCCER TEAM

Northwestern Oklahoma State University has signed two Texans, Brandi Guinn and Jordan Click, to letters of intent for the 2008-09 Lady Ranger Soccer season.

 match up physically with anyone,” remarked head coach Steve Barrows. “She also has the ability to put quality shots on frame from distance.”

Click, a defender from Abilene Wylie High School in Abilene, Tex. and a member of the Abilene Soccer Club, is known for her technical, tough and tenacious defense. “Jordan helped lead her high school team to a great regular season and later into the Texas State High School Playoffs,” stated Barrows. “Jordan will be a great addition to our defense.”


RANGER SOCCER ADDS MELONI AND BURDICK

Northwestern Oklahoma State University soccer coach Steve Barrows has announced the addition of Kayla Meloni and Kelsey Burdick to play Lady Ranger soccer during the 2008-09 season.

Meloni, a midfielder from Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas, is currently playing soccer for the Lions Futbal Club. While at Northwestern, she plans on obtaining her nursing credentials.

“Kayla has strong skills and knowledge of the game and will instantly strengthen our side,” stated Barrows. 

Burdick, also a midfielder, was an all-state performer hailing from Guthrie and is playing with the Edmond Soccer Club.

“Kelsey has a great understanding of the game and her skill and stamina will definitely help our squad,” remarked Barrows. “Her efforts helped lead Guthrie High School into the second round of state elimination.”

GUINN NAMED TO SOONER ATHLETIC ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM

Ranger soccer player Ashley Guinn was recently chosen as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference all-conference second-team.

Guinn, led the Rangers in scoring and was ranked second in the Sooner Athletic Conference with 18 goals. She also had three game-winning goals and one assist, while starting all 17 games. In her three-year tenure, Guinn has scored 26 career goals and has recorded five assists.

First-year program Rogers State had a season to remember, including three of the top five honors on the All-Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Team.

Head Coach Derek Larkin is the Coach of the Year while superstar Robin Sutherland captured both Newcomer of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. Sutherland has the most goals (43) and points (98) in the NAIA this season, establishing new Sooner Athletic Conference records.

Oklahoma City’s Zoe Barratt, a junior defender, is the Defensive Player of the Year. John Brown’s Natalie Wall was named Keeper of the Year.

GUINN NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE
ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT SQUAD

Ashley Guinn was selected as an ESPN The Magazine academic all-district first-team pick.

Northwestern Oklahoma State’s women’s soccer student-athlete Ashley Guinn was honored last week, being selected to the ESPN The Magazine academic all-district women’s soccer team. Guinn, a junior from Mansfield, Tex., was named a forward on the District 6 first-team.

Guinn, a three-year letter winner at Northwestern, led the Rangers and was ranked second in the Sooner Athletic Conference with 18 goals. She also had three game-winning goals and one assist, while starting all 17 games. In her three-year tenure, Guinn has scored 26 career goals and has recorded five assists. She currently holds a 3.85 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in business administration.  

Since Guinn was a member of the first-team all-district, she will advance to the national ballot.

“I am very happy to hear of this award,” remarked head coach Steve Barrows. “Ashley had a tremendous season and without her we certainly wouldn’t have won as many matches as we did. This is our fifth player to receive ESPN recognition in four years. To produce at the highest level on the pitch and in the classroom speaks volumes about Ashley’s dedication.”

To be eligible for the award, nominees must have a 3.2 grade point average and be sophomore, junior or senior. Sports Information Directors that are members of College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) are the only ones that can nominate and vote on student athletes. CoSIDA, founded in 1957, has over 2,200 members in the United States and Canada.

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large and women’s at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.


CHRISTINA NUNEZ TAKES FINAL
SAC AND REGION VI OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD

Northwestern freshman Christina Nunez received recognition from the Sooner Athletic Conference and from the NAIA Region VI for the week of October 22-28, as she was named the Offensive Player of the Week on the conference and regional level.

Nunez was responsible for Northwestern’s third hat trick of the season, while scoring three of the Rangers’ four goals along with an assist against St. Gregory’s University in Northwestern’s final regular season game on Tuesday, October 3rd. She finished as the Rangers’ second leading scorer with six goals on the season.

Nunez will now be eligible for the NAIA Player of the Week ballot that will be selected on Wednesday, October 31.

Northwestern finished the year at 7-10 overall and with a 4-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.


NORTHWESTERN SOCCER SEASON ENDS AFTER 2-1 LOSS TO ROGERS ST.

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State’s soccer season came to an end on Saturday, October 27 after a 2-1 loss to Rogers State University in Claremore in a Sooner Athletic Tournament Quarterfinal Match.

The Rangers, seeded sixth in the eight team tournament, fell behind ten minutes into the match, when Rogers State’s Tiffany Roberts scored a goal to take the initial 1-0 lead.

A minute and a half later, Ashley Guinn recorded her 18th goal of the season off an assist from Ashley MacWhirter to tie the game at 1-1.

After 45 minutes of scoreless play, Roberts again found the back of the net for Rogers State and scored the game-winning goal at the 57 minute mark.

Northwestern was out shot 40-10 on the afternoon, but landed seven shots compared to RSU’s 17 shots on goal.

Kelsey Archer came away with 15 saves, playing the entire game in the goal.

Northwestern finished the season with a 7-10 overall record and had a 4-5 Sooner Athletic Conference record. The Rangers didn’t have any seniors on this year’s team and will return junior Caiti Phelps, Ashley Guinn and Savannah Smith.


RANGERS DOWN ST. GREGORY’S 4-0;
MEET
ROGERS STATE IN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINAL MATCH

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Ranger soccer team ended their regular season with a 4-0 shutout against St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee on Tuesday as Christina Nunez recorded the Rangers third hat trick of the season. The win improved the Rangers to 7-9 on the season and to 4-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Nunez had the hot foot, scoring three of the Rangers’ four goals. The game was scoreless for the first 32 minutes, until Nunez scored her first goal of the match and then turned around two minutes later to add her second goal of the day. Elizabeth McCulloch and Jackie Kopacek added assists.

Nunez propelled the Rangers to a 3-0 lead, with her seventh goal of the season, just after the half on an unassisted goal.

The Rangers’ scoring leader, Ashley Guinn, scored her 17th goal of the season to close the scoring during the 69th minute.

Northwestern fired off 18 shots, while St. Gregory’s shot 11 times, with no shots on goal.

Kelsey Archer started the game in goal for Northwestern and played the first half before giving way to Sierra Willard. Neither keeper was credited with a save as all 11 Cavalier shots sailed wide.

Northwestern (7-9, 4-5) will meet Rogers State University in Claremore on Saturday, October 27 at 3 p.m. for a quarterfinal match in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament. The Rangers were awarded a sixth seed in the tournament, while the Hillcats are seeded third with a 15-2 overall record and 7-2 SAC mark.


NORTHWESTERN SOCCER FALLS IN HOME FINALE

ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern soccer team fell to Rogers State University, 3-0, in the Rangers home finale on Monday afternoon. The loss dropped the Rangers to 3-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference and to 6-9 overall, while Rogers State holds down the third place spot.

Rogers State controlled the ball most of the game, firing off 22 shots. Northwestern was only able to get seven shots off, including four shots on goal. Christina Nunez fired off three shots on goal. Ashley Guinn attempted three shots and Lee Gunn also recorded a shot on goal.

The game went scoreless until the 40th minute, when Tiffany Roberts scored to give the Hillcats the initial go-ahead goal.

Rogers State went on to score two more goals in the second half. Venessa Oxford scored the Hillcats second goal and Robin Sutherland, the NAIA national leader in goals, scored her 30th goal of the season during the 78th minute.

Deemed as last week’s SAC defensive player of the week, Kelsey Archer saved five goals and allowed two while back up Sierra Willard posted four saves and allowed a goal.

The Rangers led in fouls, 11-5, while the Hillcats took 13 corner kicks compared to none from Northwestern.

Northwestern (6-9, 3-5) will finish the regular season on the road at St. Gregory’s University on Tuesday, October 23 at 3 p.m. Currently the Rangers are seventh place in the ten team conference. The top eight teams will advance to the postseason.


KELSEY ARCHER NAMED SAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kelsey Archer was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Week for October 8-14.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Archer was honored by the Sooner Athletic Conference for the week of October 8-14, being named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Archer posted a shutout in the Rangers 3-0 win against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The shutout was her second of the season.

Northwestern will finish the regular season on the road at St. Gregory’s University on Tuesday, October 23 at 3 p.m. Currently the Rangers are seventh in the ten team conference. The top eight teams will advance to the postseason.

 


RANGER SOCCER SHUTS OUT USAO 3-0

ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak as Ashley Guinn chipped in two goals for the Rangers in their 3-0 shutout over the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The shutout was the Rangers’ third of the season.

Guinn got Northwestern in the hunt early, with a goal in just the third minute of the game off an assist from Ashley MacWhirter. The duo hooked up again just three minutes before the half, with Guinn scoring her team-leading (second in the SAC) 16th goal of the season and MacWhirter receiving credit for her team-high fourth assist.

Christiana Nunez scored her fourth goal of the year during the 83rd minute to take the Rangers to the eventual 3-0 lead, off a Savannah Smith feed.

Northwestern was out shot 23-20 by USAO, while the Drovers had 11 shots on goal compared to nine Ranger shots on goal.

Kelsey Archer earned 11 saves for the Rangers. The Drovers keeper, Destiny Rachal had six saves and three goals against.

Northwestern is currently in fifth place in the SAC conference standings with two games remaining. The top eight teams will advance to the post season. NWOSU (6-8, 2-4) will host Rogers State University on Monday, September 15 in the Rangers at 2 p.m. in the home finale. The last regular season game will be played against St. Gregory’s University on September 23 in Shawnee.


NORTHWESTERN SOCCER LOSES TO NO. 20 OKLAHOMA CITY

ALVA, Okla. – Two early goals by the No. 20 Oklahoma City University Stars gave way to an eventual 4-1 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State University in soccer action at the Alva Rec. Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

OCU’s Jessica Caudle and Malin Andersson hooked up for the Stars’ first two goals of the afternoon. The first goal came just 30 seconds into the game on OCU’s first shot. Caudle scored her fifth goal of the season after receiving an assist from Andersson. The duo connected again, five minutes later, to take a 2-0 lead.

Northwestern escaped the remainder of the half and mustered just two shots.

The Rangers pulled within one during the 47th minute after Ashley Guinn hit the back of the net following an assist from Christina Nunez.

The Stars went onto to score on a penalty kick and again during the 77th minute to pull to the 4-1 victory.

Guinn fired off three shots for the Rangers while four other Rangers took a shot each. Oklahoma City managed to get off 36 shots, nine which keeper Kelsey Archer was awarded saves.

Northwestern (5-7, 2-3) will hit the road on Friday for a conference match with Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.


RANGERS FALL TO CRIMSON STORM

ALVA, Okla. – The Ranger soccer team evened their Sooner Athletic Conference record to 2-2 after a 2-1 loss to Southern Nazarene University at the Alva Recreational Complex on Friday.

The Crimson Storm jumped ahead early with a goal on their first shot in just the second minute of play.

To put the game at a 1-1 tie, Ashley Guinn scored her 12th goal of the season during the 13th minute after the Crimson Storm goalie muffed a shot from a Northwestern free kick.

Southern Nazarene took the lead six minutes after play began in the second half, when a SNU corner kick resulted in an own goal for Northwestern. The Crimson Storm held on to the lead and held the Rangers to not a single shot in the second half.

The Rangers did get off eight shots in the first half, as Southern Nazarene took 23 total shots (16 in the second half).

NWOSU keeper Kelsey Archer picked up 11 saves, allowing two goals in 90 minutes of work. Crimson Storm goalie, Erica Brown, picked up two saves and allowed a goal.

The Rangers (5-6, 2-2) remain at home on Tuesday, October 2 for a 2 p.m. match with No. 20 Oklahoma City University.


RANGER SOCCER BLANKED BY JOHN BROWN

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – The Ranger soccer team evened their record to 5-5 overall and to 2-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference on Wednesday as the Rangers suffered a 3-0 loss to John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark.

Despite a scoreless game in the first half, John Brown was able to get 22 shots off as the Rangers shot just three times.

The Golden Eagles scored their first goal during the 53rd minute of the match and responded again with their second score three minutes later. JBU closed out the scoring with four minutes to goal, taking the 3-0 victory.

For the game, John Brown fired 51 shots. Northwestern’s goalie, Kelsey Archer, came up with a season-high 23 saves on the afternoon.

Ashley Guinn shot four of the Rangers five shots, landing two on goal, and Ashley MacWhirter was able to get off a shot on goal.

The loss put the Rangers in a tie for second place against Rogers State University.

Next up for Northwestern (5-5, 2-1) will be a home match against Southern Nazarene (4-3-1, 2-0) at the Alva Rec. Complex on Friday, September 28 at 4 p.m.


GUINN RECORDS SECOND HAT TRICK IN RANGERS 3-1 WIN OVER EAGLES

Ashley Guinn recorded her second hat trick of the season, scoring all three goals in the Rangers' 3-1 conference victory over Oklahoma Christian.

ALVA, Okla. – Ashley Guinn recorded her second hat trick of the season in the Rangers 3-1 victory over conference foe Oklahoma Christian. The win put Northwestern above .500 on the season, with the Rangers at 5-4 overall and an undefeated 2-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Guinn connected on the Rangers first shot of the game as she lofted the ball over OC’s keeper at the six minute mark off a direct kick following an Oklahoma Christian foul.

Kristin Brown of Oklahoma Christian knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal just ten minutes after the half.

Guinn’s second goal came after she rebounded her own shot off Eagle goalie Jacqueline Kinch and hit the back of the net with Kinch on the ground. Guinn proved to be a threat again on her third goal of the night, when she again was dead red on a free kick during the 83rd minute of the match.

Oklahoma Christian controlled the majority of the game on the Rangers end of the field and fired off 25 shots. Northwestern was effective in their shot selection, as the three goals came on just seven total shots.

Ranger keeper Kelsey Archer kept the Eagles in check, coming up with seven saves.

Northwestern (5-4, 2-0) is off until Wednesday, September 26, when the Rangers travel to Siloam Springs, Ark. to meet up with John Brown University for a 4 p.m. match.


NORTHWESTERN SOCCER DOMINATES BETHANY;
SHUTOUT SWEDES 3-0

ALVA, Okla. – Despite heavy winds at the Alva Rec. Complex, the Ranger soccer team controlled the majority of the game over Bethany (Kan.) to take a 3-1 victory. The win evened the Rangers to 4-4 on the season.

Sarah Bryant scored the first two goals for the Rangers. She netted the first goal off an assist from Hannah Layden during the ninth minute of the match. Nine minutes later Bryant found the back of the net again on an unassisted score. The goals were Bryant’s first two of the season.

Northwestern held a huge shooting advantage, getting off 25 shots with the wind in the first half. The Rangers held Bethany to just three shots in the first period.

Ashley Guinn extended the Rangers’ 2-0 halftime lead after an assist from Ashley MacWhirter in the 73rd minute of the match. Guinn extended her team scoring lead to eight goals.

For the game, the Rangers held a huge shot lead, holding a 33-8 advantage in that department. Northwestern held the Swedes to only five shots in the second half, when Bethany had the wind to their backs.

Sierra Willard recorded her first shutout of the season while coming up with five saves. Bethany’s keeper, Katherine Greenup, saved 13 Ranger shots.

The Northwestern soccer team (4-4, 1-0) will return to action at the Alva Rec. Complex at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 20 when the Rangers open their home portion of the SAC schedule against Oklahoma Christian.


NORTHWESTERN WINS 4-1 SAC OPENER OVER WAYLAND BAPTIST

Ashley MacWhirter scored her first Ranger goal in the Rangers 4-1 victory of Wayland Baptist.

PLAINVIEW, Tex. – The Ranger soccer team came away victorious in their first Sooner Athletic Conference match of the season, defeating Wayland Baptist 4-1 in Plainview, Tex. on Saturday.

Ashley Guinn continued her scoring barrage with two goals. Guinn struck at the 27th minute to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Hannah Layden was responsible for the assist.

Wayland Baptist’s Najuka Anderson found the back of the net on an unassisted goal during the 34th minute to send the game into a 1-1 tie at intermission.

The Rangers quickly regained the lead after eight minutes into the second half, when Jackie Kopacek scored her first goal of her NWOSU career on a direct kick.

Guinn struck again, scoring her second goal of the match and seventh goal of the season, at the 67:20 mark. Ashley MacWhirter also received her first goal off an assist from Guinn to end the game’s scoring at 4-1 in the 86th minute.

Shots were plentiful as the Rangers took 22, while WBU got off 29. Ranger goalie Kelsey Archer came up with 12 saves while playing the entire match and Wayland’s goalkeeper was responsible for 11 saves.

MacWhirter took a team-high eight shots while Guinn, Kopacek and Lee Gunn sent off three shots of their own. Sarah Bryant and Caitlin Phelps both shot twice.

The Rangers (3-4, 1-0) host Bethany (Kan.) College on Monday, September 17 at 6 p.m. in a non-conference match.


RANGERS SUFFER OVERTIME LOSS AT EAST CENTRAL

ADA, Okla. – The Lady Ranger soccer team was defeated during the last minute of overtime as East Central’s Heather Martin connected on her second goal of the match at Lady Tiger Field in Ada. With the 2-1 overtime loss, Northwestern falls to 2-4 on the season and will begin conference play on Saturday.

East Central found the scoreboard first as Martin scored her first goal of the match during the 18th minute. Ashley Guinn scored an unassisted goal, her fifth goal of the season, at the 37 minute mark to knot the game at 1-1 going into the half.

Guinn fired five shots as the Rangers were outshot 18-11. Ashley MacWhirter and Sarah Bryant had two shots on goal, while Caitlin Phelps and Christina Nunez also recorded shots on goal.

In the goal, Kelsey Archer came up with eight saves for the Rangers in taking the loss. ECU starting keeper, Christie Sarginson, had five saves and a goal against. Her replacement, Kelly Davis, recorded the win as she picked up four saves on the night.

Northwestern (2-4) begins Sooner Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 15 when the Rangers travel to Plainview, Tex. for a match with Wayland Baptist at 2 p.m.


GUINN NAMED REGION VI PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Ashley Guinn (10) has been named the Region VI Player of the Week for her hat trick over SWOSU.

After being recognized by the Sooner Athletic Conference on Monday, Ashley Guinn, Northwestern Oklahoma State University midfielder, has been named Region VI Offensive Player of the Week.

Guinn’s hat trick in a 3-1 win against NCAA Division II Southwestern Oklahoma State University prompted her for the honor. She will be up for the NAIA Player of the Week, which is release after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12.

 

 

 

 

 


ASHLEY GUINN NAMED SAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Northwestern Oklahoma State University midfielder Ashley Guinn was honored by the Sooner Athletic Conference while being named the Offensive Player of the Week.

Guinn posted a hat trick in the Rangers’ 3-1 victory against in-state rival Southwestern Oklahoma State University. All three of Guinn’s goals came in the first half. She now leads the Rangers with four goals on the season.

The Rangers are on the road this week as they take on East Central in Ada on Thursday and head to Texas to meet Wayland Baptist on Saturday.

 


GUINN’S HAT TRICK LIFTS RANGERS OVER BULLDOGS IN 3-1 VICTORY

ALVA, Okla. – Ashley Guinn’s hat trick was all the scoring the Rangers would need for Northwestern’s 3-1 defeat of longtime rival Southwestern Oklahoma State University at the Alva Recreational Complex on Sunday. The win advanced the Rangers to 2-3 on the season.

All three of Guinn’s goals came in the first half. The first score came in the 15th minute off an assist from Christina Nunez. Her second and third goals were only two minutes apart as she scored during the 25th and 27th minutes with Jackie Kopacek and Sarah Bryant receiving credit for the assists, respectively. Guinn now leads the Rangers with four goals on the season.

Southwestern’s goal came during the 76th minute as Robin Reidle scored her second goal of the season for the Bulldogs.

Northwestern outshot SWOSU in the first half, 9-7, while the roles were reversed in the second half, with the Bulldogs owning the shooting advantage 15-4. Only four Rangers took shots, with Guinn leading the way with five. Bryant and Nunez each shot three times, while Ashley MAcWhirter got off two shots.

Ranger goalkeeper Kelsey Archer was credited with 11 saves. SWOSU’s keeper, Becky Hilterbran, made five saves and allowed all three Ranger goals.

Northwestern (2-3) hits the road to Ada on Thursday, September 13 when the Rangers take on East Central at 5 p.m.


SOCCER DROPS TWO IN NEBRASKA

Freshman Christina Nunez scored both of the Rangers' goals in Nebraska. Nunez has scored three of the Rangers' five goals.

DOANE, Neb. – Northwestern’s soccer team fell to 1-3 on the season after losses against Hastings (Neb.) and Doane (Neb.) during the past week.

On Sunday, Northwestern was defeated by Hastings 2-0. Hastings scored a goal in each half and shut down the Ranger offense, not allowing them to get a shot off.

Ranger keeper Kelsey Archer came up with seven saves on nine shots.

Christina Nunez scored her second and third goals of the season in the eventual 4-2 loss against Doane on Tuesday. The Rangers pulled within a goal, trailing 2-1 in the first half, after Nunez’ first goal in the 53rd minute. 

Doane went ahead 4-1 as Samantha Exstrom scored all four goals.

Nunez found the net during the 63rd minute to end the scoring for both teams.

The Rangers took seven shots each half while Doane got off nine shots each half.

Northwestern goalie Sierra Willard came up with 10 saves.  

The Rangers will return home on Sunday, September 9 for a 2 p.m. game against Southwestern Oklahoma State.


RANGER SOCCER EVENS SEASON AT 1-1 AFTER SHUTOUT AGAINST LYON

ALVA, Okla. – The Northwestern women’s soccer team evened their season to 1-1 after a 3-0 shutout against Lyon (Ark.) College at the Alva Recreational Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Northwestern dropped its season opener, 5-0, last Saturday against Baker (Kan.) University.  

On Saturday against Baker, Northwestern found itself down only 1-0 at the half. But with some injuries and a short bench gave way to the Rangers falling behind in the second half and succumbing to the 5-0 opening game loss.

Northwestern used a big second half, scoring three goals, to defeat Lyon College on Tuesday.

Freshman Christina Nunez scored the first goal off an assist from Lee Gunn during the 47th minute of play. Caitlin Phelps followed with an unassisted lofty goal in the 58th minute. The Rangers capped their scoring efforts on an Ashely Guinn goal with 17 minutes to play. She was assisted by Phelps and Nunez.

Ranger keeper Kelsey Archer had 10 saves as the Pipers shot 16 times.

The Rangers were outshot 16-15 in the game, but NWOSU held an 11-7 advantage in the second half.

Northwestern’s next game will be on Sunday, September 2 at Hastings (Neb.) College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
