Everything you want to know about the CPT Purpose: The College Placement Test (CPT) Score is used to determine your readiness for college level courses in English, Reading, Mathematics and Science. Test information: ● The College Board publishes the test. ● The CPT is computerized. However, neither computer knowledge nor typing skills are required. You only need to type basic information, such as name, SS# and birthdates. ● Test components include: The Reading Comprehension Test includes questions, which involve identifying main ideas in reading passages, applying information, and drawing inferences from a passage. A second type of question involves answering questions about the relationship between two sentences. Categories covered include social sciences, natural and physical sciences, human relations and practical affairs, and the arts. The Sentences Skills Test includes two different types of questions. The first type consists of sentence correction questions in which the student selects an appropriate word or phrase to substitute for an underlined portion of sentence. The second type, construction of shift questions, requires that a sentence be rewritten according to the criteria shown while maintaining essentially the same meaning as original question. The Arithmetic Test includes three different types of questions. The first involves operations with whole numbers and fractions, the second type involves operations with decimals and percents, and the third type involves applications and problem solving. The Elementary Algebra Test includes three different types of questions. The first involves operations with integers and rational numbers, the second type involves operations with algebraic expressions, and the third type involves the solutions of equations, inequalities, and word problems. Note: ● The CPT is not timed; each section contains about 15 questions and will take you 20-50 minutes. (Approximate time for all sections of the test is about 2 to 2 ½ hours) ● You must complete the CPT before enrollment. ● Choose wisely when deciding when to test. If you are ill rushed for time, or mentally preoccupied, it might be best to test some other time. ● You must fill out an application for admission and pay the $15.00 application fee before taking the CPT. |
