Head coach Alan Hall had his offensive unit play against his defensive unit for about two hours testing out how each group has improved over the spring season.

There was no official score kept in the game.

The coaching staff also had the kickers participate kicking extra points, field goals and punts.

The crowd saw many exciting plays including a few from the quarterback position. Kyle Jech looked sharp in throwing a pair of touchdown passes.

Hall also was impressed with the performance of tight end Chris Chamberlain and wide receiver Andrew King.

Hall also praised some of his defensive players. Defensive lineman Charles Snider and linebackers Eric Feemster and Michael Harmon made life difficult for the offensive unit.

Today's players and Hall's first recruiting class will make up the 2012 roster.

"We still have a lot of work to do," Hall said. "But, I enjoyed the effort by everybody"

The Rowdy Rangers cooked burgers and hot dogs for the team, staff and alumni at the conclusion of the game.

While the game concludes the spring season, Hall and staff will be hard at work at the Ranger football summer camps.

During today's press conference coach Hall emphasized the importance of recruiting in the state of Oklahoma. Hall and his staff tallied 36 kids from around the state with three kids coming from Florida, one from Texas and one from Kansas.

All 41 of these players are the start of Hall's first class of recruits as head coach of the Rangers.
In short order, Hall has completed one of his most pressing tasks.

“It was imperative that we put the staff in place quickly to begin the process of learning about our current players and to begin delivering this spring’s recruiting class,” Hall said. “We have been able to bring to Northwestern some very talented coaches who will represent the University in the highest manner and will work tirelessly to build a successful program on and off the field.”

Hall will handle the play-calling duties but will be joined on the offensive side of the ball by Kevin Turco, who will serve as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.

Turco was a position coach at Newberry College (S.C.) for five seasons and also served as a graduate assistant coach at East Carolina University and the University of South Carolina. Turco has a bachelor’s degree in history from Western New England University and graduate degree from the University of Saint Mary and East Carolina University.

“Coach Turco is a tireless worker who exudes professionalism in all that he does,” Hall said. “He is an excellent teacher of offensive line fundamentals which leads to production on the field.”

Hall also has employed two full-time coaches on the defensive side.

Former Northwestern player Willie Spears will return to his alma mater as defensive coordinator and will coach defensive backs.

Spears served as head football coach at Suwannee High School (Fla.) during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He was the head coach at Jefferson County High School (Fla.) in 2009, where he was named the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year. Spears earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern and a master’s degree from Troy University (Ala.).

“Coach Spears is a dynamic young coach who has had a multitude of success both on and off the field,” Hall said. “As a member of Northwestern’s 1999 national championship team, he understands the tradition involved in the program and will instill a sense of Ranger pride in our players.”

Joining Spears will be Dwayne Curry, who will oversee the linebackers and manage the strength and conditioning program.

Curry comes to Northwestern from Garden City Community College (Kan.). He also has collegiate experience as a defensive coach at Savannah State University (Ga.), Hinds Community College (Miss.), Birmingham Southern College (Ala.), East Mississippi Community College and East Texas Baptist University. Curry has a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University.

“Coach Curry is a former All-American at Mississippi State University and has experience at virtually all levels of collegiate football,” Hall said. “He excels at installing a work ethic and discipline in his players.”
In addition to the full-time coaches, Hall has brought with him three graduate assistant coaches.

“The graduate assistants are tremendously important to the success of the program,” he said. “They put in all of the hours and get little of the glory. Our graduate assistants are excited about being here and have been working all through the holiday break on the recruiting trail.”

Tyrone Bolware will coach the defensive line and handle special teams. He has coaching experience at the high school level in Florida and was a team captain as a player at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree.

“Coach Bolware has been a great mentor to young people and will do the same at Northwestern,” Hall said. “His attention to detail and experience in special teams both as a player and coach will pay huge dividends this fall.”

Coaching the wide receivers will be Bret Story, who has experience at both the high school and college level. Story has a bachelor’s degree from Newberry College and was a free agent draft pick of the Texas Rangers baseball club in 2007.

“Coach Story is passionate about the success of his players and will make a great addition to our staff,” Hall said.

R. Alex Haynes will coach the running backs, an area he coached at Summerville High School in Georgia. Haynes also has a bachelor’s degree from Newberry College.

“Coach Haynes has a tremendous work ethic and his zeal to be a great coach is exemplified in all that he does,” Hall said.

Wardlaw named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete

<itunes:author>Eric Scott</itunes:author>

ROME, Ga. ALVA, Okla. (12-1-11) - A veteran collegiate coach with experience from junior college to Division I has been selected to become the new head football coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Alan Hall was introduced to the media, players and fans at a news conference Thursday.

Hall comes to Northwestern after serving for a year as athletic director and head football coach at Bible Baptist School in Savannah, Ga. Prior to that, Hall was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Savannah State University.

“The football program at Northwestern is nationally-recognized at the small college level, and there is a long history of success,” Hall said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this program and hope to build on the traditions that come with being a Ranger.

“I want to thank President (Janet) Cunningham and Andy Carter for the opportunity. I will work tirelessly to build a program that will be a source of pride for the University. To the fans, and to all of those who wore a Ranger uniform in the past, I promise that you will see a team that will play with great intensity and passion.”
Carter, director of athletics, said Hall’s coaching experience, along with his mentorship of student-athletes and positive rapport with fans and supporters, placed Hall at the top of the list.

“Coach Hall has all of the characteristics and skills necessary to successfully lead our program into Division II,” Carter said. “We want our football program to succeed on the field and our players to excel in the classroom and in their personal development. I am confident that Coach Hall is the right person at the right time to make this happen.”

Hall played collegiately at the University of Miami (Fla.) and was a member of the Hurricanes’ 1991 national championship team. Hall was the backup to Heisman Trophy winner Gino Torretta. Hall later transferred and eventually earned his bachelor’s degree from Charter Oak (Conn.) State College. He also holds a master’s degree from the University of West Alabama.

Hall began his coaching career as offensive line coach and director of football operations at Monterey Peninsula College (Calif.) in 1997. He spent several years coaching at the junior college level, including stops at Jayhawk Conference schools Independence Community College and Dodge City Community College.

In 2003, Hall became assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Division II Newberry (S.C.) College. His 2004 and 2005 teams finished in the top 25 in total offense, and he coached a candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy, the Division II award for the nation’s top player.

Hall joined the Division I ranks in 2008 as offensive coordinator at Savannah State University. He later took a similar position at Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University before returning to Savannah State.

In his career, Hall has coached four players who went on to compete in the National Football League and four junior college All-Americans.

He averaged 10.8 yards a punt return this season, more than 2 yards more than the second punt returner in the conference, and was just behind teammate Jared Jackson on kick return average.

Jones was also named to the First Team defensive squad as he led the Rangers in tackles this season with 58, broke up seven pass, intercepted a pass, forced and recovered a fumble.

Joining Jones the All-CSFL Special Teams First Team list is Jackson as a kick returner and punter P.J. Stimson. Jackson returned 14 kicks for an average of 27 yards a return, while Stimson booted 46 punts this season, averaging 37 yards per punt.

A prolific wide-out from Guthrie, Okla., Kent McDonald highlights the First Team offense for the Rangers. McDonald pulled in 915 yards on 58 catches in 2011, finding the end zone on seven occasions.

He was joined by one of the hardest working members of the Ranger offense in Keith Barefield Jr. in the tight end position, as well as Jackson as a First Team running back with 749 yards and nine touchdowns.

Sophomore Peter Brooks was the other Ranger earning First Team honors for his play on the defensive line.
(11-4-11) – The Northwestern Oklahoma State University football team closed the season with a heartbreaking loss on the road to Oklahoma Panhandle State, 41-35.

Panhandle State battled back from a 28-7 halftime lead by the Rangers, scoring 19 points in the third and 15 points and in the fourth quarter. The Aggies scored the winning touchdown with 13-seconds remaining on a five yard pass from Kevin Lauchland to Justin Paterson.

The Ranger loss was the first loss to the Aggies since the 1983 season. Northwestern finishes the season with 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the Central States Football League.

Northwestern jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead with seven minutes left in the first quarter, with the first touchdown coming on a Kyle Jech pass to Steven Majike from four yards out.

On the ensuing possession, the Rangers forced the Aggies to punt. Fortunately, a Ranger lineman was able to get a hand on the punt, allowing P.J. Stimson to pick it up and run it in for a touchdown to go up 14-0.

Again, it wouldn’t take long for the Rangers to tack on the third score of the game as an Aggie mental mistake proved costly.

The Rangers picked up their third score of the ball game midway through the first as Jermil Martin punched one in from the 2-yard line.

After the Aggies put their first score of the game on the board in the second, Northwestern’s Jared Jackson scored on an eight-yard run. Jackson led the Rangers with 108 yards on the ground in the contest.

Late in the third quarter, the Rangers added their final score of the afternoon as a blocked punt was picked up by Chris Campbell who finished the play off by walking into the endzone, giving the Rangers a 35-13 lead to that point.

However, as the Oklahoma Panhandle weather began to turn nasty during the second half, so did the momentum. The Aggies scored 28-unanswered points to put away the game.

The Aggie running game did everything they could to lead their team back on senior day in Goodwell, out rushing the Rangers 260-to-102 on 50 carries. Overall, OPSU outgained Northwestern 414-to-231.

Northwestern’s loss gives them their first losing season since 2006.

Jech, Colmenares honored by conference

<itunes:author>Eric Scott</itunes:author>

EDMOND, Okla. BAREFIELD TO STEP DOWN AS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

After leading the Northwestern Oklahoma State University football program for five seasons, Keith Barefield today announced his resignation as head football coach at the end of the season.

Northwestern’s final regular season game is Saturday at Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University family for the past five years,” Barefield said. “I am deeply grateful to Dr. Janet Cunningham for giving me the opportunity to be a Ranger and lead this football program.

“My life has been enriched by the relationships I have developed throughout the Ranger and Alva communities. I would like to especially thank my players and coaches who have given so much to me and this program. They are the ones who have made my time here so enjoyable.”

Barefield has guided the Rangers to a 34-19 record in his five seasons, which included a pair of Central State Football League titles and three NAIA playoff appearances. Northwestern is 4-5 this season.

He collected his 100th victory as a collegiate head coach last Saturday following a 62-39 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University, and has a career record of 100-52-2. Before coming to Northwestern, Barefield was the head coach for 10 seasons at Evangel University in Missouri.

“At this juncture in my career and with the transitions within the athletic program, I believe this is the best time for me to pursue other interests,” Barefield said. “I am also convinced that it is the best time for Northwestern to bring in new energy and leadership to make the best transition into NCAA. The timing is right for both of us.

“I wish the University and the athletic program the best in the future. I will always be a Ranger and all I have to say at this point is Ride, Rangers, Ride.”

Andrew Carter, director of athletics, credited Barefield for his work in returning the program to its winning ways.

“Coach Barefield did an excellent job of turning around the program upon his arrival, and his contributions to Northwestern and the football program are certainly recognized and appreciated,” Carter said.

Carter said Northwestern will immediately begin an expedited, but thorough, process for finding a new head coach.

(10-29-11) – Jared Jackson and Kyle Jech help Northwestern Oklahoma State to their best output of the season in a 62-39 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas), helping their coach pick up his 100th victory.

Ranger head man Keith Barefield entered the season needing just four victories to reach the 100-win milestone as a coach in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, something only a select group are ever able to achieve.

On Saturday, that feat was accomplished merely hours after escorting his son, Keith Jr., during senior day activities.

Barefield’s career record now stands at 100-52-2, with 33 of his wins coming at the helm of Northwestern since 2006. From 1989-98, Barefield was the head coach at his alma mater, Evangel (Mo.).

He is currently tenth among active coaches in the NAIA in victories.

The Lions of Southwestern Assemblies of God seemed to take the anticipation out of the Rangers early on as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead on two very short scoring drives. However, the Rangers settled down, cutting the lead in half late in the first as Jackson punched it in from two-yards out.

Jackson finished the game with a career high of 174 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

Following a 50-yard field goal off the foot of SAGU’s James Gish, the Rangers rode their way back on a Jech touchdown pass to Taylor Hooper from eight yards out, followed by an Edgar Colmenares field goal from 22 yards out.

The two teams continued to trade punches as the first half came to a close. The visitors put together a long 10-play drive to take another touchdown lead.

However, Colmenares stuck again, this time booting it for a 45-yard field goal as time ran out of the first half, cutting the Lion lead to four, 24-20.

SAGU added another touchdown early in the third quarter before Jackson broke loose for a 45-yard score in the third quarter. Then, after a SAGU turnover, the Ranger running back scored again almost a minute and a half later to put the Rangers back on top, 34-31.

Northwestern continued to turn Lion turnovers into points throughout the third quarter as Hunter Wolf took a handoff in for a 20-yard score and wide receiver Taylor Hooper found Andrew King on a 28-yard trick play for a touchdown.

King led all receivers with 128 yards on six catches, including a 66-yard hook up with Jech in the second quarter.

The Rangers put the finishing touchdowns on an emotional win with a touchdown pass from Jech to Justin Schanbacher, followed by a Jech keeper for a score. Jech finished with 315 yards and two touchdowns through the air on 19 completions, and 46 yards and touchdown on the ground.

Northwestern (4-5, 3-2) looks to close their season in style next Saturday (Nov. 5) in a showdown with Panhandle State in Goodwell. (10-22-11) – Despite great effort the Northwestern Oklahoma State University offense, the Rangers bid for a comeback victory came up short as the home team fell to rival Langston on Saturday, 42-39.

In a game that had already featured blocked field goals, extra points, fumbles and interceptions, it was an onside kick that almost became the story of game.

The Rangers found themselves looking at a deep deficit with 2:36 to go in the contest, trailing the nationally ranked Lions, 42-35, following a Langston touchdown.

However, the resilient Rangers quickly answered with a touchdown of their own, driving 55 yards on five plays. The drive was capped off by a 15-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Jech to Kent McDonald to cut the lead to ten following the extra point.

On the extra point, a penalty occurred against the Rangers, which was assessed on the kick off.

Looking up at the Lions, the Rangers hands team came on the field for the onside attempt. Northwestern specialist Edgar Comenares executed a perfect onside kick in which Javarri Liggins recovered at the Ranger 29-yard line.

Jech and company took advantage of the free possession, taking the ball 71 yards in just 1:14. The quarterback added another touchdown with 19-seconds remaining when he found Jared Jackson out of the back field.

Jech finished the game with one of his best performance this season, completing 26 throws to Ranger receivers for 247 yards and four touchdowns, all of which are season highs. He also added seven yards on the ground.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the final onside attempt of the game was unsuccessful, and the Lions lined up in the victory formation to close out the battle.

The running tandem of Jackson and Jermil Martin helped the Rangers to 247 yards on the ground. Despite the final score, the Rangers offense came through on the field by outperforming the Lions by way of total yards, 525 to 429.

Other than his touchdown passes to McDonald and Jackson, Jech found Andrew King from 5-yards out to close out the opening possession of the game, and hooked up with Justin Schanbacher as the first half came to a close.

Northwestern (3-5, 2-2) looks to rebound in their final home game of the season next Saturday against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas). A later than normal kick, the contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Ranger Field.

Rangers suffer first conference loss in trip-up at Bacone College

<itunes:author>Eric Scott</itunes:author>

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (10-15-11) – Northwestern Oklahoma State University football suffered their first conference loss of the year, tripping up on the road at Bacone College, 35-28.

The loss drops the No. 23 Rangers to 3-4 on the season and 2-1 in Central States Football League action. Up next for the Rangers is a matchup with longtime conference rival Langston at Ranger Field on Oct. 22.

Northwestern took a quick lead in the game against the Bacone College Warriors, on a keeper by starting quarterback Keith Barefield Jr. Making his first career start as a quarterback for the Rangers, Barefield found Kent McDonald on a 41-yard connection to set up the first score of the game.

Barefield was 8-for-21 passing for 138 yards. He also added a touchdown through the air, finding Andrew King during the third quarter from 28-yards out with seconds remaining in the first half, cutting a Bacone lead to 23-21.

The senior quarterback also added another rushing touchdown on the ground with a 1:21 on the clock in the second quarter. He totaled 16-yards on eight carriers in the game.

Kyle Jech, who didn’t start the game do to an injury, took the field late in the third quarter and gave the Ranger offense a spark. With 7:19 to go in the game, Jech completed 6-of-7 passes, including a three-yard toss to McDonald for a touchdown, to cut the lead to seven.

Jech and the Rangers got one final opportunity with 1:23 remaining, but were unable to move the ball, turning the ball over to the Warriors on downs in their final possession.

On the touchdown drive led by Jech, the Rangers suffered a couple of penalties. Due to moving the back a couple of times, Jech threw for 105 of his 109 yards on the drive.

McDonald was the leading receiver for Northwestern with 95 yards on five grabs.

A defense that has stepped up in the previous two victories for the Rangers, the ‘Black Cloud’ struggled in Muskogee, giving up a total of 457 yards total, including 279 on the ground.

The defense did force two Warrior turnovers with Chris Jones knocked a ball away from a Bacone ball carrier and an interception by Zenario Shuler. Shuler also recorded the only Northwestern sack for a 12-yard loss.

Saturday’s loss was the Rangers first failed attempt to give head coach Keith Barefield his 100th victory as a head coach at the NAIA level.

Northwestern football re-enters top 25

<itunes:author>Eric Scott</itunes:author>

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (10-11-11) — Following Saturday’s big victory over then No. 10 Southern Nazarene, the Northwestern Oklahoma State University football team finds themselves back in the top 25.

In the Central States Football League game against the Crimson Storm, a matchup that was billed as the game that may decide the conference championship, the Rangers found themselves looking up at the visitors in the first quarter.

Southern Nazarene marched their opening drive down the field to take a quick lead, 6-0.

The Rangers put their first points on the scoreboard early in the second quarter as quarterback Kyle Jech found senior Kent McDonald on a pass between the hash marks. McDonald broke for tackles before reaching the end zone.

McDonald led all receivers with 119 yards on five catches.

Following a blocked extra point, the score was tied at six, and stayed the same through the remainder of the first half.

Just like the first half, the Crimson Storm came out on the first drive of the second half with a touchdown. On the point after attempt, Peter Brooks got his hand on a low kick to keep the score at 12-6.

It didn’t take long for the Rangers to answer. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Jech dumped a pass over a Crimson Storm defender into the hands of Avery Morris who took the ball 82 yards to the house. Jech then completed a pass to Jared Jackson for a two-point conversion.

Jech, last week’s CSFL offensive player of the week, finished the game with 229 yards and two touchdowns on 11 completions.
(10-1-11) – The Northwestern Oklahoma State University defense stepped up late on Saturday afternoon, improving their homecoming winning streak with a big victory over NCAA Div. II Independent Missouri S&T, 22-17.

The Miners of S&T forced the Rangers to punt late in the fourth quarter, giving the visitors just enough time to drive the field with all three timeouts to potentially leave Oklahoma with a victory.

After a couple of first downs by the Miners on a drive that started at their own four yard line thanks to Ranger punter P.J. Stimson sticking a punt, the Miners picked up a couple of first downs to get the ball to the Northwestern 33-yard line.

That is when the Ranger secondary stepped up huge.

The Miner quarterback was unsuccessful on is first two attempts from the 33. With the Miners looking at third and ten, Ranger defender Reggie Cole dove in front of Kevin Dillon to break up a potential first down.

With one more shot on fourth and time running out, S&T signal caller heaved a pass towards the end zone. With a jump ball situation coming, Marvin Desir leaded up, nearly picking off the pass for the Rangers, saving the victory in front of a large crowd at Ranger Field.

Northwestern has now won 18 consecutive homecoming games, dating back to the 1993 season.

The Rangers started the final stanza looking up at the Miners who 17-16 with 12:47 to go. On the ensuing kickoff after the field goal to take the lead for S&T, Augie McCulley broke loose for a return into the Miners’ territory.

After a couple big running plays by Taylor Hooper and Jermil Martin, Northwestern quarterback Kyle Jech kept the ball, stretching over the goal line for the go ahead score.

Jech had his hand in all three Northwestern touchdowns on the afternoon, finding Keith Barefield Jr. from five yards out in the first quarter and Andrew King on an 18-yard connection in the third.

The junior from Kingfisher, Okla., finished the afternoon with 15 completions for 168 yards through the air and 19 on the ground. His favorite target remained the same as previous contests this season, hooking up with Kent McDonald seven times for 129 yards.

Despite being out gained offensively by the Miners, 373-256, the Ranger defense stepped up at timely points in the contest.

The defense was led by Michael Harmon who recorded ten tackles, six of which were solo, and Desir who roamed the secondary, breaking up two Miner passes.

Northwestern’s victory moves head coach Keith Barefield one step closer to his 100th victory at the NAIA level at 98, tenth all-time.

The Rangers will play the second of four home games in the month of October next Saturday as they are set to host rival Southern Nazarene at 2 p.m. at Ranger Field.

CSFL honors Jones for second straight week

<itunes:author>Eric Scott</itunes:author>

EDMOND, Okla.
Against the Steers in Texas, the offense started off slow the first quarter of the contest, scoring on their third drive as Jared Jackson took the ball off the right side from a yard out.

After a quick four and out by the Steers with the first quarter coming to a close, the Rangers added their second score of the game with 11:35 remaining in the first half on a two-yard blast up the middle from transfer running back Jermil Martin.

On the ensuing Texas College drive, the Rangers forced the Steers into a punting situation from their own end zone. On the snap, Michael Ray busted through the line, getting a hand on the ball and popping it in the air, eventually coming down with it for the touchdown.

Ray added two tackles and an interception in the game.

The Rangers closed the first half with a 27-0 lead following a 1-yard keeper by Kyle Jech.

Five classes of first grade students from the Washington Early Childhood Center in Alva visited Ranger Field where they got the opportunity to tour the new South End Zone Complex and Myers Stadium.

During their tour of the new locker rooms and weight room, the Northwestern players compared their responsibilities as student-athletes to the responsibilities young kids have at home and school. The players encouraged the young guests to respect their parents, elders and teachers, and to take care of themselves.

Following the tours around the complex, the elementary school students and players then took the field. Ranger players join in with the kids, helping them build their skills, teaching them the basics of football.

Rangers blanked by CSU-Pueblo

<itunes:author>Eric Scott</itunes:author>

Pueblo, Colo.
