The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Art Society (NAS) is sponsoring its sixth annual Art Show in April and has a new category for those interested in recycling. All university students, as well as current and retired employees, are encouraged to enter the show.

A “Reuse, Recycle, Re-Art” category has been added this year to get people thinking about what is thrown away every day, and what types of new things can be made by thinking creatively.

“The idea is to get people thinking more wisely about what they throw away every day, and to see if they can make something useful or artful from these items,” said Angelia Case, NAS sponsor. “The majority of the art piece to be entered in this category should be made from something that would otherwise end up in the landfill, like grocery bags, pop cans or bottles or lids, coffee filters, CDs and CD cases, scraps of fabric, old kitchen utensils, to even things like clothes washer drums, computer parts and old toilet plumbing parts. Your imagination in creating art from these types of items can be endless.”

To help those interested in entering this category to know more about the types of art that can be created, just do an Internet search for terms such as art from recycled materials or trash art. More information about this category and specific rules will be given later.

The traditional part of the art show continues to offer three divisions of competition and 18 categories within those divisions. They are as follows:

Painting and Graphics: oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolor painting, pastel, pencil, pen and ink, mixed media;

Photography and Digital Art: black and white, life, outdoor beauty, elements of design, Ranger surprise and digital darkroom.

3-D/Functional Art: fiber arts (quilting, needlework, all fiber arts), sculpture, designer arts/jewelry, decorative painting and functional art.

A breakdown of descriptions for each category within this Photography and Digital Art division is provided below. Photos may be digital or film.

Black and White – for all photos black and white only.

Life – The category for all living creatures; can be people from all walks of life – family, kids, couples, relationships, sports, etc., as well as animals, including dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, wildlife, zoo life, farm animals and even insects.

Outdoor Beauty – The photos can include landscapes, outdoor scenes, nature images, sunsets, urban landscapes, farms, buildings, etc.

Elements of Design – Artistic images that make good use of elements of design. These photos must show line, shape, pattern, form, texture, perspective, etc. It can be any subject matter as long as it is a photograph; no graphic illustrations or digital creations for this category.

Ranger Surprise – If the photo doesn’t seem to fit any of the other categories, it will be placed in this one.

Digital Darkroom – This category is digital art – original images created or drastically altered in software like Adobe Photoshop and other image enhancing software. All digital darkroom work must be the main attraction or a big part of the photo. Examples include Photoshop composites and creations; images greatly manipulated with filters; photos with artistic borders; and photos stitched into a panoramic.

Nearly $700 will be available in prizes to those selected as winners in the show, with the majority of the prize money being given to students. The Student Government Association is co-sponsoring the show again this year, and is providing $250 toward prizes for Northwestern students.

“There’s less than a month left now before we start accepting entry forms for the show, so I encourage students, as well as our current and retired employees, from all three of our campuses to start creating something to enter,” Case said.

Additional information about the art show or about the club in general can be obtained by contacting Case at (580) 327-8577 or arcase@nwosu.edu.
