Graves was introduced to his team Wednesday evening.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as the new head coach, and coming back to Alva and Northwestern,” said Graves. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Northwestern and want to share that experience with the current and future members of the rodeo team. I’m pleased to be able to give something back to the University and the community.”

Andrew Carter, director of athletics, said Graves’ record of success and familiarity with the program made him the best choice for the job following a nationwide search.

“Stockton’s experience as a performer at the collegiate and professional levels certainly gives him instant credibility with the members of our rodeo team, the collegiate rodeo community, and with prospective recruits,” said Carter. “Being a graduate of Northwestern, he understands the importance of the program to the University and the community, and the expectations that go along with being the head coach.”

Originally from Ponca City, Graves was a member of the Northwestern rodeo team from 1997 through 2002. He was the Central Plains Region champion steer wrestler twice during his collegiate career and qualified for the College National Final Rodeo three times. He still holds the College National Finals arena record of 3.4 seconds.
Graves graduated from Northwestern in 2002 with a degree in agriculture business.

As a professional cowboy, he has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo six times in his career, is a two-time Prairie Circuit Champion, a two-time Dodge National Circuit Finals qualifier and a Dodge National Circuit Finals Champion – all in steer wrestling. He has been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 1997.

Graves was inducted into the Northwestern Sports Hall of Fame in January.

Ranger cowgirls win home event, Kimzey all-around winner

<itunes:author>Eric Scott</itunes:author>

<img style="float: right; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 8px; width: 300px; height: 200px;border: #000000 1px solid;" alt="Karly Benzie, junior from Bayfield, Colo., team ropes with Jessie Suazo of Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
The Rangers were just 10 points shy of second place Missouri Valley College, while Sam Houston State University took home first place with 755 points.

"I felt like we had an outstanding finals,” said head coach Shannon Frascht. “We were able to win three of the four championship go-round rings in steer wrestling and an illegal head catch cost us a national championship in the team roping.”

“Our fifth place team ranking was icing on the cake due to the fact we were only able to have four members on our team when most other teams were able to have six on their men's teams. I thought we had the talent and the guys proved it. I couldn't be happier with their performance."

Kyle Irwin finished the highest of the four Ranger cowboys competing in the CNFR, finishing second in steer wrestling. Irwin recorded the low round out of 39 participants on his first go with a 3.5 second run. In the second round he posted a 5.4 and followed that with a third round time of 6.7. Irwin’s final round of 3.6 put him just a tenth of a second back of the steer wrestling winner.

Tanner Braden, along with Western Oklahoma State University cowboy Andrew Ward, finished fourth in team roping. The duo turned in a 6.9 in round one and followed with scores of 7.2 and 7.0 in rounds two and three, respectively. They ended up with a no score in the final round.

Kody Woodward placed 16th in steer wrestling, recording a first round time of 4.3 and a second go of 4.1. He received a no score in round three.

Trenton Johnson finished 31st and 32nd in the two events he competed in, tie down roping and steer wrestling. In tie down roping, he took home 31st after a no score in round one, a 10.7 in round two and an 11.2 in the third go. Johnson finished in 32nd in steer wrestling with a 6.6 in the opening round. He went on to score an 18.5 in round two and had a no score in the third go.

With 10 rodeos under their belt, Kody Woodward, Kyle Irwin, Tanner Braden and Trenton Johnson have earned the honor to represent Northwestern at the CNFR.

Woodward, who will be making his fourth consecutive CNFR appearance, will compete in steer wrestling. At the completion of all 10 rodeos, Woodward led the Central Plains Region in steer wrestling with 880 points, 247 in front of his nearest competitor. He is ranked fourth in the nation, 145 points behind the national leader.

A senior from Dupree, S.D., Woodward won the steer wrestling events at the Kansas State University and Garden City Community College rodeos. Last year at the CNFR, Woodward finished in fourth place. During the 2009 CNFR, he took 17th place. He placed second in 2008 as a freshman and has won the Central Plains Region twice and was runner up once in his four years of eligibility.

Kyle Irwin and Trenton Johnson will be joining Woodward in steer wrestling. Irwin, a junior from Robertsdale, Ala., finished third in the Central Plains Region standings with 535 points. This will be his third CNFR qualification. He was the Central Plains Region Champion in 2010.

Johnson, from Mound City, Kan., is fourth in the region in steer wrestling, just 15 points behind Irwin with 520 points. The senior won three all-around titles in as many weeks, winning the title at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Fort Scott Community College and at the Garden City Community College rodeos. He was second in the Central Plains Region in the men’s all around, 148 points back of first. Johnson will also be competing in tie down roping, where he finished 10th in the region with 215 points. This will be Johnson’s second CNFR qualification in the same two events.

Tanner Braden qualified for the CNFR in the team roping as a heeler. The junior from Dewey finished third in the region with 420 points. This will be his second appearance in the CNFR.

“All four qualifiers are veterans of the sport both at the collegiate and professional levels,” stated Rodeo Coach Shannon Frascht. “With the experience and consistency of this group, we could very well walk away with a national championship.”

The CNFR is the "Rose Bowl" of college rodeo. It is where the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association crowns individual event champions in saddle bronc riding, bare back riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and goat tying. National team championships are also awarded to both men's and women's teams. Over 400 cowboys and cowgirls from over 100 universities and colleges compete in Casper each year. Contestants compete all year in one of the NIRA's 11 regions for a chance to rope or ride at the CNFR.

The top three students in each event, and top two men's and women's teams from the NIRA's 11 regions will qualify for the CNFR.

The gift will provide the future site of Northwestern’s own rodeo facilities.

"This gift from the Campbells will fulfill a critical need for Northwestern and its rodeo program, and the university is tremendously appreciative of their willingness to provide us with a facility that will take our program to a new level," said Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president. "I'm sure every member of the rodeo program shares in our excitement and in our gratitude."

Don Campbell and Skeeter Bird, Northwestern Foundation CEO, worked together reviewing several options that would benefit both the university and the Campbells as donors.

“Don first contacted us to let us know that he thought the university needed to have the property and was willing to discuss how we could make that happen,” Bird said. “We finally found what we consider an optimal solution that included Don and Phyllis gifting about 80 percent of the property and the Foundation purchasing the rest.”

The gift—16 acres of land, a barn and livestock pens—combined with the Foundation’s purchase of an additional 5 acres, a shop building and grain bin, will meet the rodeo team’s practice needs.

“It’s very beneficial to the college and to us as donors,” Don said of the mutually beneficial agreement. “We had discussed it and thought it was in our best interest and that of the students coming to Northwestern.”

Don’s only tie to Northwestern may be his son Cris Campbell, a 1995 graduate, but at the heart of his gift is a desire to invest in the young people of northwest Oklahoma and to share a lifelong passion of working with cattle and horses.

“I think all young people should have an opportunity, and I felt that this property would be very beneficial to use for the rodeo team,” Don said. “It is an ideal location.”

The ideal location, 21 acres on U.S. Highway 281 just north of Alva, will provide a place for the rodeo team to practice and meet, a place they feel like is theirs, Don said. In addition to assisting today’s students, he expects the facilities to help in recruiting students to the Northwestern rodeo program, a program with new potential as a result of the hire of Frascht and plans for facilities.

Frascht reiterated Don’s sentiments.

“It’s great as a recruitment tool,” he said. “It’s been a long time in the making, but I think it will be well received by not only the students but also the community.

“I want to thank Don and Phyllis, the Airport Board, the Woods County Fair Board, the Woods County Commissioners and the City of Alva for support of our past and future endeavors. I look forward to continuing those relationships with the addition of our new practice facility. With the help of donors like Don and Phyllis, I hope to take this rodeo program to another level of competition.”

Looking for a place to locate, Don moved to Alva in 1973 with his new bride, Phyllis. He came to the area as a distributor for a line of farm equipment, but it wasn’t long before he was working as an auctioneer and real estate broker.

Active in the real estate and residential development business for 25 years, Don purchased the gifted property in 1989 and operated it as a livestock sale for four years. He closed what was then the Alva Livestock Company in 1994 before converting it to private use for his farming and ranching operation, which he started in 1986.

“Northwest Oklahoma has been good to me,” Don, originally from the Tulsa area, said.

And to northwest Oklahoma, Northwestern is very important –creating jobs and serving the state well –he said. The rodeo facilities will be an attraction for the regional university, but the good of the gift doesn’t stop there.

“It was interesting to show Don how he could take property that was not really benefiting anyone and give the property new life while saving himself thousands of dollars in taxes,” Bird said. “I consider Don to be an excellent businessman and now an excellent friend because of the opportunity to work together.”
