Mr. Maier made
his way to Oklahoma after earning a Bachelor's Degree in Science from St.
Lawrence University (Physics)
and being awarded New York State teaching certification. He then
earned his Master's of Science Degree from Oklahoma
State University (Physics)
in 1998. While at both institutions, Mr. Maier was continually involved
with other students and faculty working as a peer tutor, student instructional
assistant, lab assistant and teaching assistant as well as participating
in several student organizations.
Mr. Maier has been Instructor of Physics at NWOSU since 1998 teaching
Earth & Space Science,
General Physical Science, General Physics I & II, and Physical
Science for Elementary Education Majors (Physics by Inquiry).
His area of academic research is Physics Education for non-science
majors. He is primarily interested in improving science education
methodology of future teachers through the inquiry method. The inquiry
method builds a stronger foundation for students by requiring them to internalize
information gained through experimentation. This process challenges
common misunderstandings and is more concrete and memorable for the students.
The development of the course Physical Science for Elementary Education
Majors in 1999 is a product of this interest, to be offered each spring
semester at NWOSU.
Outside interests include fishing, traveling, collecting sands, rocketeering,
and milling about in lab.
"There is something fascinating about
science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such
a trifling investment of fact." - Mark Twain (Life on the Mississippi)
