How much are fines and how do I pay them? / Why Do I have a Library hold?

When you check out a book, it is usually charged to your library account for three weeks (time and charges vary on some material). If the book is not returned within the period specified, an overdue charge will be applied to your account until the item is returned.

A student will be fined ten cents ($ .10) per day for each overdue book. All days will be counted, including days on which the library is closed.

When a student loses a book, he/she should immediately notify the library at 580-327-8574.

The replacement cost for a book will be determined by the current price listed in Books in Print; if the book is no longer in print, the replacement cost will be set at the average cost of a book in that field, e.g. math, science, literature, etc.

If an overdue charge is not paid, a hold appears on your NWOSU account.  This can prevent you from enrolling, receiving a copy of your grades, or acquiring a copy of your transcript even several years later! If a book is lost, you are responsible for paying for the item or a hold will appear on your account as well. To inquire about holds on your account, call the library at 580-327-8574.

How do I request a book that is housed at another NWOSU Library?

If the information included in the record states that the material you are looking for is housed at another NWOSU campus library, you will need to request a library-to-library loan.

To request a library-to-library loan, contact library staff or the campus secretary at the campus nearest to you. Let them know as much of the information about the materials as possible as well as your name and where you can be reached. When the library material arrives you will receive an e-mail message and can pick up the delivery from the library staff or secretary who helped you with the request.

What do L.S., B, F, q, and Ref stand for with call numbers?

Books with L.S. after the call number are books for children and young adults shelved separately from the general collection.

A call number with a B before the number indicates that the book is shelved with the Biographies.

F denotes that the book is shelved up on the balcony with Fiction or in the McNaughton fiction collection

If a "Q" or an "f" appears at the beginning of the call number, it means the book is oversized and is shelved at the end of the numbered section. Example: If the call number was q822.34 or f801.5 the book will be shelved at the very end of the 800's.

Ref at the beginning of the call numbers indicates that the book is shelved in the reference section. These books are only available for use in the library and cannot be checked out.

How do I request an interlibrary loan?

First, check the NWOSU Library catalog to make sure the book is not available at the campus library.  If you are requesting an article, make sure to check the shelves as well as the catalog - journal holdings are still being updated.  If you are unable to come to the library to check, please feel free to call for help in locating the book or article.

To request an interlibrary loan, fill out an ILL request with one of the campus libraries.

We need to know the title, author, and publication information of the book or article to do a thorough search. If you are off campus, e-mail the request and your contact information to nwlibraries@nwosu.edu.
