NORTHWESTERN FALLS TO SIOUX FALLS
IN PLAYOFF GAME
 |
| No. 18
Northwestern Oklahoma State's season came to
an end as the Rangers fell 35-7 against No. 1
University of Sioux Falls. |
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
In its first playoff game after a two-year
absence, No. 18 Northwestern Oklahoma State
University fell 35-7 to the NAIA’s top-ranked
University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D. in
the first round of the NAIA National Championship
Series. The Rangers dropped to 8-4 on the year,
while USF extended its win streak to 25 games and
are 11-0 on the season.
The Cougars’ offense was very efficient in the
first half, scoring on all four possessions. After
Northwestern received the opening kickoff, the
Rangers drove 28 yards on six plays before turning
the ball over on a first-and-ten. Sioux Falls
didn’t waste any time and took 1:43 off the clock
on four plays to score the game’s first touchdown.
USF quarterback Chad Cavender completed a 36-yard
pass to Matt Lindgren for the Cougars to go up 7-0
at the 11:26 mark in the first quarter.
Northwestern answered the Cougar’s call, and on
the next drive Thez Robinson capped a 16-play,
83-yard drive to knot the game at 7-7. During the
drive, the NWOSU converted six first downs and
killed almost eight minutes of clock.
Sioux Falls took a 14-7 lead at the one minute
mark in the first quarter. The Cougars did so on a
10-yard keeper from Cavender.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Rangers marched
20-yards on 13 plays to erase six minutes off the
clock, before being forced to punt.
The Cougars received the ball on their own
eight-yard line after a 50-yard punt from Aaron
Vermillion. Sioux Falls went the length of the
field, 92-yards, to score their third consecutive
touchdown and take a 21-7 lead. Cavender completed
a 26-yard pass to Jon Ryan for the score.
Northwestern received the ball with 6:28 to go
before halftime and went four and out. A
Vermillion punt left the Cougars on their own 32
yard line.
Sioux Falls used six plays to go 68 yards while
scoring their fourth touchdown and took a
commanding 28-7 lead on the Rangers. Cavender
again found the end zone on a pass, this time on a
14-yard completion.
After the half, the Cougars took the wind out of
Northwestern as they scored on the first down of
the half. Erik Cimpl got loose for 71 yards to
score the Cougars final touchdown on their fifth
drive.
The Rangers got as close as the Sioux Falls
16-yard line during the third quarter, but turned
the ball over on downs. The fourth quarter proved
to be tough for the Rangers to move the ball,
going three plays and out all three possessions in
the final quarter.
Northwestern finished with 278 yards of total
offense, including 181 yards on the ground.
Robinson finished with 107 yards, just one yard
shy of tying Patrick Crayton’s single season
rushing record of 1,426 yards. Barefield picked up
61 yards on 10 carries and completed 12-of-20
passes for 97 yards, including two interceptions.
Korey Williams was the leading receiver with 62
yards on eight catches.
The Ranger defense gave up 506 total yards, with
355 of those yards on the ground. Kelvin Morgan
paced NWOSU with six tackles, including five solo
stops. Jimmy Gomez and Patrick Travis had 5.5
tackles each.
The Cougar’s Erik Cimple and Ryan Lowmiller
combined for over 300 yards rushing, with Cimple
running for 177 yards on 18 carries. Cavender
completed 10-of-13 passes for 151 yards and three
touchdowns.
Northwestern finished the season with an 8-4
record and claimed the Central States Football
League Championship under first year head coach
Keith Barefield.

Robinson set an individual game school record
for most rushing yards in a game with 274 in
the Rangers 45-7 CSFL clinching win over SNU. |
BETHANY, Okla. –
In a matchup of two NAIA top 25 teams, No. 19
Northwestern Oklahoma State (8-3, 4-0) should
further its season after cruising past No. 25
Southern Nazarene (6-4, 4-2) in the regular season
finale for both teams. Thez Robinson broke the
school’s individual game rushing record, while
Northwestern rolled to the 45-7 win at SNU
Football Stadium in Bethany.
Northwestern got off to a great start in the first
quarter. Kicking off to start the game, NWOSU got
the ball back after standing up the Crimson Storm
in their first three offensive plays. On first and
ten from the SNU 40, Rod Gray got loose to score
the Rangers first touchdown to cap a 52-yard drive

The Rangers took advantage of two more first
quarter miscues by the Crimson Storm. On the
ensuing kickoff, Southern Nazarene fumbled the
return at the SNU 17-yard line. Northwestern was
stood up in four plays and Aaron Vermillion booted
a 33-yard field goal to give the Rangers 10-0
lead, just over five minutes into the game.
Forty-eight seconds later, the Rangers struck
again. Two plays after the NWOSU kickoff, SNU
turned the ball over again. This time Carlos
Cotton was off to the races, as he picked off
quarterback Tyler Schneider’s pass at the Crimson
Storm 27-yard line for an interception return.
After a scoreless second quarter, Northwestern led
17-0.
The Rangers’ domination continued in the second
half, scoring a touchdown in their first
possession. Northwestern quarterback Billy
Barefield finished a 10-play, 80-yard drive, with
a 14-yard keeper to put NWOSU up 24-0.
Southern Nazarene chipped away and found its way
into the end zone after driving 93-yards on eight
plays. Schneider completed an 18-yard pass to
Jared Elmore for the score and got SNU on the
scoreboard, trailing 24-7.
Three plays later, Northwestern took a 31-7 lead,
as Colt Oller finished a 56-yard drive.
Robinson found the end zone for the second time of
the afternoon with a 27-yard run on Northwestern’s
first possession of the fourth quarter. The
touchdown increased the Rangers’ lead to 38-7 with
11:11 to play.
The final Ranger score came on a Courtney Jones’
touchdown with 3:37 left in the game. Jones scored
on a one-yard run to end a Ranger 56-yard drive.
Robinson never lost a yard in 27 rushes and
finished with 274 yards, breaking the single game
rushing record. The previous record was 257 yards
held by Al Hunt against Sioux Fall (S.D.) in 2000.
Robinson is 108 yards shy of the individual season
record, set in 2003 by current Dallas Cowboy and
former Ranger Patrick Crayton.
Northwestern racked up 496 yards rushing on the
Crimson Storm on its way to 534 yards of offense.
Gray racked up 92 yards on 20 carries and was
followed by 84 yards from Barefield. Barefield
