MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM SUSPENDED
FROM POSTSEASON COMPETITION
Northwestern Oklahoma State University has been informed
by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
(NAIA) that its men’s cross country team will not be
allowed to compete in postseason competition for the 2008
season for failing to meet competition standards in 2007.
NAIA
rules require cross country teams participating in
postseason competition to enter at least five runners. At
the 2007 NAIA Region VI meet, Northwestern competed with
only four runners.
“Our
men’s team had five runners registered and certified for
the Region VI meet, but one runner did not make the trip
because of illness,” said Cody Hooper, who served as cross
country coach at the time. “Unfortunately, five runners
have to start the race to meet competition standards set
by the NAIA. We have not had that problem in the past, but
it is my job as the administrator to get the competitors
to the race and I take full responsibility for the outcome
and apologize to the University and the team.”
Athletic director Bob Battisti said Northwestern is
disappointed that this year’s runners will be forced to
deal with the penalty imposed by the NAIA.
Battisti said Northwestern graduate Shane Hansen has been
selected to lead the cross country programs.
AMBER STEPHENS JOINS NORTHWESTERN
ATHLETIC STAFF
Amber
Stephens will become the newest member of the Northwestern
Oklahoma State University Athletic Department and will
occupy the position of men’s and women’s cross country
coach for the Rangers.
Stephens duties will begin in January of
2008, after she graduates from Fort Hays (Kan.) State
University with a master’s in health and human performance
in December. She holds a bachelor’s in medical diagnostic
imaging from Fort Hays.
Over the past two years, Stephens has
served as the Assistant Cross Country Coach and Assistant
Track and Field Coach for the Tigers. An accomplished
athlete herself, Stephens was the NJCAA National Cross
Country Individual Champion in 2000 while attending Colby
(Kan.) Community College. She was also a member of Colby’s
National Championship Team in 1999. Stephens was a NJCAA
Track and Field All-American in 2000 and 2001.
“Amber Stephens is a highly motivated
individual who will do a super job in leading our cross
country team,” stated Athletic Director Bob Battisti. “She
is the right person at the right time to get this program
up and running.”
Northwestern will begin its sixth year of
cross country as they enter the 2008 season.
