VERMILLION, S.D. – In its second consecutive game against a NCAA opponent, the Ranger football team dropped a 48-14 game against the University of South Dakota on Saturday in the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
South Dakota scored on its first drive, on a 30-yard run with 11:23 left in the first quarter. Northwestern answered on the ensuing kickoff, as Nate Guillory had an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to give the Rangers a 7-6 advantage, due to a missed USD extra point.
Northwestern suffered 42 unanswered points, as the Coyotes scored six more touchdowns, one via the run and five on passing plays.
The final Ranger score came with 10:30 to go in the game, when Kent McDonald found the end zone on a 57-yard pass from Kyle Jech.
South Dakota totaled 455 yards with 240 in the air and 215 rushing.
The Rangers finished with 350 total offensive yards and passed for 350.
Jech completed 20-of-34 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown, while McDonald and Korey Williams were the main targets with seven catches each. McDonald picked up 132 yards, while Williams finished with 85.
Guillory rushed 14 times for 43 yards to lead the Rangers in rushing and picked up 227 total yards, including 180 from six kick off returns and four receiving. Jared Jackson had 22 yards rushing.
Rocky Lee led the Ranger defensive unit with 11 tackles, nine of which were solo. Chris Jones had seven stops, while Peter Brooks and Marcus Cooley had six tackles each. Jackson and Tyler Palacios each had a fumble recovery, while Jackson forced a fumble.
Northwestern (0-2) will begin its Central States Football League schedule when they take on Texas College on Saturday, Sept. 25 in a 3 p.m. homecoming game at Ranger Field.
