Ranger Rodeo Team Finishes Fifth at CNFR, Irwin and Braden Take Top 5 Honors

2011 CNFR ParticipantsCASPER, Wyo. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State University men’s rodeo team had an outstanding showing at the 62nd College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyoming, taking fifth place with 500 points.

The Rangers were just 10 points shy of second place Missouri Valley College, while Sam Houston State University took home first place with 755 points.

"I felt like we had an outstanding finals,” said head coach Shannon Frascht. “We were able to win three of the four championship go-round rings in steer wrestling and an illegal head catch cost us a national championship in the team roping.”

“Our fifth place team ranking was icing on the cake due to the fact we were only able to have four members on our team when most other teams were able to have six on their men's teams. I thought we had the talent and the guys proved it. I couldn't be happier with their performance."

Kyle Irwin finished the highest of the four Ranger cowboys competing in the CNFR, finishing second in steer wrestling. Irwin recorded the low round out of 39 participants on his first go with a 3.5 second run. In the second round he posted a 5.4 and followed that with a third round time of 6.7. Irwin’s final round of 3.6 put him just a tenth of a second back of the steer wrestling winner.

Tanner Braden, along with Western Oklahoma State University cowboy Andrew Ward, finished fourth in team roping. The duo turned in a 6.9 in round one and followed with scores of 7.2 and 7.0 in rounds two and three, respectively. They ended up with a no score in the final round.

Kody Woodward placed 16th in steer wrestling, recording a first round time of 4.3 and a second go of 4.1. He received a no score in round three.

Trenton Johnson finished 31st and 32nd in the two events he competed in, tie down roping and steer wrestling. In tie down roping, he took home 31st after a no score in round one, a 10.7 in round two and an 11.2 in the third go. Johnson finished in 32nd in steer wrestling with a 6.6 in the opening round. He went on to score an 18.5 in round two and had a no score in the third go.
