ALVA, Okla. – No. 7 Lubbock Christian University (Tex.) extended its winning streak to 16 games with a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern at the Alva Rec. Complex on Friday, but had to earn the game one win with five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Northwestern fell 7-3 and 9-0 to the Chaps.
Lubbock Christian turned a second inning leadoff walk into a run to take a 1-0 early lead. Northwestern added three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead as leadoff hitter Jasmine Braxton got the ball rolling. Braxton’s single was followed by a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt from Therese Beeler. Braxton scored on a squeeze bunt by Katie Thomas. Kellie Mason singled in Beeler and Stephanie Hines, who walked, giving NWOSU the two-run advantage.
Headed into the seventh inning, up 3-1, the Rangers gave up four hits, five runs and committed an error in the bottom half of the inning, allowing LCU to come from behind for the 7-3 win.
Northwestern was held to four hits and was credited with three unearned runs. Mason pitched 6.1 innings before yielding way to Ashton Fitzgerald. Mason struck out three batters and allowed seven hits.
Lubbock Christian came up with 12 hits in game two and scored in two innings for the five-inning run-run in game two. The Chaps scored four runs in the second inning and added five more in the fourth.
The Rangers were held to three hits, as Kylee Wilson, Meagan Burditt and Hines all had singles in the game.
Mason (8-16) started in the circle and pitched 1.2 innings before giving way to Meagan Lack, who threw the final 3.1 innings.
Northwestern (13-33, 4-20) will play its final regular season game against Mid-America Christian on Wednesday, Apr. 27. The doubleheader in Alva will begin at 3 p.m.
