In the Rangers regular season non-conference finale, an added game against Kansas Wesleyan on Monday, Northwestern was defeated 9-4 in Salina, Kan.
With the win, Kansas Wesleyan extended its winning streak to 17 consecutive games. The Coyotes are currently leading the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Association.
After an inning of play, Kansas Wesleyan held a 3-2 lead. The Rangers tacked on two more runs in the third inning on four hits to pull ahead with a 4-3 advantage. The Coyotes added a solo run in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at 4-4.
Northwestern was held scoreless over the final six innings.
Kansas Wesleyan broke the tie with a run in the fourth and extended the lead with four runs in the eighth inning.
Jarad Moore (2-1) pitched 115 pitches through seven innings, sitting down four batters in 33 batters faced. Cameron Taylor pitched an out in the eighth inning and Matt Stratton recorded the final two outs.
Vincent Valdez had four hits in five trips to the plate, along with two doubles to put him just a double shy of tying the school record. The Rangers top two hitters in batting average, Chris Williams (.435) and Anthony Cros (.430), had two hits each. Five other Rangers had a hit in the game.
Both teams recorded 13 hits and had an error.
Northwestern (26-22, 10-14) has two more Sooner Athletic Conference series remaining. On Thursday, April 23, Northwestern will host Southern Nazarene in a 3 p.m. nine-inning affair at Ranger Field and return the trip to Bethany on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Rangers final series is against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma the following week.
