EDMOND, Okla. – Northwestern dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian University on Tuesday, falling 10-2 and 11-8.
The Rangers had four hits in the opener as leadoff batter Jasmine Braxton led the way with two hits in as many at bats. Kellie Mason added a fourth inning home run, her sixth of the season, while Katie Thomas singled in the game.
Northwestern and Oklahoma Christian were tied 1-1 after the first inning and fell behind 3-1 after three innings. Mason’s home run brought the Rangers to within a run, but five Oklahoma Christian runs in the fifth inning led way to the eventual sixth inning run-rule.
Mason took the loss on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings. She struck out six batters, gave up 11 hits and allowed nine runs. Ashton Fitzgerald pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing two hits and a run.
In game two, Northwestern held a 6-2 lead after scoring five runs in the third inning. NWOSU did so on Mason’s seventh home run of the year, a three-run shot, and used doubles by Meagan Lack and Heather Brewer.
The Eagles pounded out six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning and scored seven runs, taking a 9-6 lead. OC added two more runs in the fifth inning, while Northwestern was able to score a pair of runs in its last at bat.
Northwestern had nine hits, with Brewer turning in a 3-for-4 performance with a double, run scored and two runs batted in. Lack’s double and single gave her two hits in three at bats along with a run batted in.
Lack was handed the loss, as she and Fitzgerald split time on the mound. Both pitchers threw three innings, combining for five strikeouts and eight earned runs.
Northwestern (13-31, 4-18) will host No. 8 Lubbock Christian (Tex.) on Friday, Apr. 22 in a noon doubleheader at the Alva Rec. Complex.
