CHICKASHA, Okla. – With a tie game headed into the ninth inning, USAO was able to push across a run to take the 10-9 victory at Bill Smith Ballpark in Chickasha on Monday afternoon.
With the Rangers leading 2-1 through two innings of play, NWOSU extended its lead to 5-1 with after a three-run homer by Joe Cervantes. USAO scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to trail by two.
Northwestern added two more runs in the fifth inning, taking a 7-3 lead, but USAO answered with four runs on four hits and two errors, tying the game at 7-7 through five innings.
The two teams were tied at 9-9 after the Drovers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and NWOSU scored two runs in the top of the seventh.
After neither team was able to score in the eighth inning, the Drovers held NWOSU scoreless in the top of the ninth inning, despite leaving a runner on second base.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning for USAO, the Drovers tripled, followed by an intentional walk. An RBI single drove in the winning run to lead to the one-run USAO victory.
Both teams had 14 hits on the afternoon with George Flores and Cervantes leading Northwestern with three-hit games, as both had home runs. Cervantes tallied four runs batted in, while Flores had two RBI and added a pair of doubles.
Garry Thomas started on the hill for the Rangers and pitched four complete innings. He allowed eight hits and five earned runs while fanning one. Jordan Flittie pitched to seven batters in an inning of relief before Chase Phelps threw the final 3.1 innings. Phelps (3-2) took the loss and allowed one run, four hits and struck out four batters.
The Rangers (24-21, 7-19) host Mid-America Christian University for a 2 p.m. nine inning game on Thursday, Apr. 21 at Myers Stadium.
