HAYS, Kan. – The Ranger men’s and women’s rodeo team finished out the 2009-10 season with fifth place finishes at the Fort Hays State University Rodeo in Hays, Kan. Northwestern’s women’s team fell into a three-way tie for fifth, as the men’s team held down the fifth place spot by itself.
Steer wrestling was the most populated event for the men, as Paul Tierney finished in second place with a 9.5, just four tenths off the lead. Cole Wilson and Taylor Hughes took fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The duo of Jeremy Wiebener and Dawson McMaster won the team roping event with a 14.4. They were joined by Tanner Braden and his partner Ryan VonAhn of Southeastern Oklahoma State, who finished in sixth place and Clay Phillips and Collin Domer of Garden City Community College, who followed in seventh place.
Chancy Lovinggood took ninth place in bareback riding, while Perry Dietz found himself in a three-way tie for seventh in tie down roping.
Three cowgirls placed for the Ranger women’s rodeo team.
Jenna Hampton won breakaway roping with a time of 6.2 seconds, while Janise Blanton finished eighth in the event.
Toya Vogt tied for third in goat tying with a time of 16.5.
Northwestern men’s team remained in fourth place in the Central Plains Region with 2,760 points. The women’s team lost a 215-point first place advantage and dropped to second in the region, 105 points back of Oklahoma Panhandle State University, who won the Fort Hays State Rodeo.
Though the Central Plains Region Rodeos are finished, Northwestern will have individuals that will participate in the Collegiate National Finals Rodeo during June 13-19 in Casper, Wyo. More information will be released as participants are named.
