SHAWNEE, Okla. – In the second meeting between the Cavaliers and Rangers on the softball field, the result turned out the same. Northwestern and St. Gregory’s split games on Thursday, with the Rangers taking game one 3-1, before falling 3-2 in Shawnee.
The Rangers scored single runs in the first and second innings to own an early 2-0 lead. Therese Beeler scored the first run of the game as Katie Thomas singled her in during the first inning. NWOSU’s second run came when Megan Burditt walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from McKenna Wilson, stole third and later scored on Jasmine Braxton’s single to left field.
Northwestern held a 3-0 lead as Stephanie Hines singled in Wilson for the third run of the game. St. Gregory’s only run came with two outs in the sixth inning.
The Rangers had five hits and gave up six. Braxton was 2-for-4 with a run batted in, while Wilson, Thomas and Hines all had singles.
Kellie Mason (8-11) received the complete game win, her 11th of the season.
After three and a half innings in game two, Northwestern held a 2-0 lead. That lead diminished as St. Gregory’s scored all three of its runs in the bottom half of the third inning on three hits and one error.
Mason pitched all six innings, allowing two earned runs and fanning two batters.
Thomas had two doubles, upping her total to 17 on the season. Hines and Meagan Lack both had singles.
Northwestern (12-26, 4-16) will play four games in the Domino’s Capital City Classic at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City hosted by Oklahoma City University. Northwestern begin the tournament with Columbia (Mo.) at noon on Friday. They will close Friday out with a 5 p.m. game against Central Baptist (Ark.) before playing Central Baptist again at 3 p.m. on Saturday and finish the tournament with a 5 p.m. game against host Oklahoma City.
