OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Wade Schwerdtfeger’s two-RBI ninth-inning single to centerfield with two strikes proved to be the game winner as Northwestern Oklahoma State defeated Mid-America Christian 3-2 in Oklahoma City on Thursday, April 1. The win lifted NWOSU to 17-12 on the season and to 4-9 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Danny Santiago (5-3) kept Mid-America Christian intact, fanning 13 batters and spreading seven hits in the complete-game victory.
Northwestern struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Vincent Valdez’ double to left field drove in Tom Huddleston, who singled to get the inning going.
Mid-America scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to go ahead by a 2-1 margin.
Northwestern began the ninth inning with the first two batters reaching base. Valdez singled to start the inning, followed by Chris Williams who was hit by a pitch. Both players were subbed for pinch runners, Clint Dodds and Quinton Haynes, who moved to second and third on Tom O’Gorman’s sacrifice bunt to third base. With a 0-2 count and one out, Schwerdtfeger provided the eventual game-winning hit to center, scoring both Dodds and Haynes.
In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Santiago struck out two Evangels and got a groundout to end any hopes of an Evangel comeback.
The Rangers had one more hit than the Evangels, leading that category 8-7. Valdez and Schwerdtfeger both had half of the Ranger hits, with two hits each. Valdez had the only extra base hit for Northwestern, hitting his team-leading 11th double.
The Rangers (17-12, 4-9) and Evangels will finish the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 3 at Myers Stadium.
