LUBBOCK, Tex. – No. 24 Northwestern posted its highest scoring game against a Sooner Athletic Conference opponent in its’ opening game against John Brown at the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament in Lubbock, Tex., but that wasn’t enough, as JBU’s hot shooting led them to a 96-88 win over the Rangers.
John Brown’s Abel Galliguez scored the Golden Eagles first eight points and after a 3-3 tie, put the Rangers trailing for the remainder of the game.
The Golden Eagles were 9-of-11 from three-point range and shot 59 percent from the floor to hold a 51-37 lead at the half.
Brandon Brown hit a three-pointer and added a free throw with 5:37 left to pull the Rangers within six points, down 75-70.
Jason Rogers hit a three to make it 84-80 with 1:49 left, but JBU’s 15-of-18 from the free throw line, spread over the final five minutes of the game, led to the eventual 96-88 win.
Northwestern was out shot by two percent from the field, 52 to 50 percent, made 10-of-27 from the beyond the arc and connected on 12-of-19 free throws.
John Brown hit 10 three’s and scored 30 points from the free throw line on 39 attempts.
Northwestern had five players in double figures, as Brandon Brown led the way with 22 points. Brown finished 8-of-17 from the field, along with a pair of three’s and four free throws. Brandon Dixon added a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jason Rogers hit four three-pointers for 12 points. Termaine Snyder and Catrell Currie ended up with 10 points each.
Jarrett McGriff and Abel Galliguez paced JBU with 22 and 21 points, respectively.
The 24th ranked Rangers (20-11) will wait until next week when the 32-team NAIA Division I National Championship Qualifiers are announced to see if and when the Rangers might play in the tournament in Kansas City, Mo. The National Tournament runs March 18-24.
