Northwestern Advances to Semifinals with 73-68 Win over John BrownOKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Northwestern broke the tie for fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference as the Rangers defeated John Brown (Ark.) 73-68 in the first round of the 2011 Twid’s Sooner Athletic Conference held at Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City. John Brown entered the game as the fourth seed while the Rangers were fifth due to tie breakers, but by night’s end, the Rangers won fourth place outright. The victory put Northwestern in an 8 p.m. semifinal game against No. 10 Oklahoma Baptist on Friday, March 4.

A game that was set for 9:45 p.m., tipoff didn’t happen until around 11 p.m. because of a triple overtime game earlier in the day in the men’s bracket between Rogers State and Lubbock Christian.

Jonathan Freemyer, Orren Tims and Marshall Bell combined for 58 of the Rangers’ 73 points. 

After one tie at the 2-2 mark, Northwestern held a lead the entire first half. The Rangers closed the period with six unanswered points to lead 27-18.

Northwestern held a healthy second half lead and climbed 17-points ahead of the Golden Eagles, leading 41-24 with 14:47 left. 

John Brown used an 18-7 run from the 6:03 mark to 1:08 on the clock to cut the lead to four points with the Rangers up 67-63. Northwestern warded off the Golden Eagles in the final minute and took an eight-point lead with 19 seconds remaining as JBU hit a last second three-pointer.

Freemyer was the game’s high scorer with 24 points. He hit two trey’s, a pair of free throws and was 10-of-16 from the floor. Tims followed with 22 points, with 10 of those coming off of free throws. Bell hit two three-pointers and finished with 12 points.

The Rangers shot 41 percent on the night, including 54 percent in the second half. NWOSU hit 5-of-13 from three and sunk 22-of-32 free throws. 

John Brown shot two percent better, hitting 43 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles made six three’s and were 14-of 25 from the charity stripe.

The Rangers and tenth-ranked Bison of Oklahoma Baptist will meet on Friday, March 4 for an 8 p.m. start.
