ALVA, Okla. – The No. 7th ranked Oklahoma City Stars snuck past the Rangers 2-1, and 4-1, in extra innings, on Saturday, giving OCU the three-game sweep over Northwestern.
In the opener, OCU’s leadoff hitter Ruben Sosa walked and later scored to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.
Northwestern knotted the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning, when pinch runner Doug Seuer, who was running for Juan Natal, scored an unearned run.
The Stars added the game-winning run in the seventh inning and left Northwestern with a runner on second base to avoid a Ranger rally.
Chase Phelps (1-1) scattered six hits and fanned eight batters. He allowed two runs while pitching to 31 batters in seven innings.
Both teams finished with six hits each, all singles, as six different Rangers had hits in the game.
Northwestern out hit Oklahoma City 10-4 in the second game, but a three-run eighth inning led to the Stars victory.
OCU scored its first run in the third inning and the Rangers countered with a run in the sixth inning to tie the score. Vincent Valdez hit his first home run of the season for the only Northwestern run.
Valdez finished 3-for-4 with the only run scored and run batted in while Michael Ciombor and J.C. Aguayo had two hits each.
Ben Dorman (1-4) pitched 7.1 innings and gave up only one earned run and three hits. He struck out two batters in 24 at bats. Derek Epps pitched the final two outs and gave up a run in four batters faced.
The Rangers (12-9, 2-7) head south to Dallas, Tex. for a Monday doubleheader with Dallas Christian at noon.
