The Northwestern Ranger basketball team will play McKendree University (Ill.) in the first round of the NAIA National Basketball Tournament at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 19. The 32-field tournament, held at Municipal Auditorium in Downtown Kansas City, Mo., will be begin Wednesday, March 18 and run through Tuesday, March 24.
Northwestern, ranked No. 26 in the NAIA, finished the season at 20-11 overall and tied for third in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 15-7 record.
No. 7 McKendree enters the tournament with a 28-5 record and held the NAIA’s longest streak of the season, 21 games. That streak came to an end in a 65-54 loss to Columbia College in the championship game of the American Midwest Conference Tournament.
The Championship is a single-elimination tournament featuring 18 automatic qualifiers from 11 Division I affiliated conferences, Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), 1 host berth, and 13 at-large berths, which are determined using the final regular-season rating released yesterday (March 11).
In all, there are 31 games spanning seven days. The first three days pack in eight games each day starting at 9 a.m. Single session and all-tournament tickets are on sale through the Municipal Auditorium Box Office or Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com, by calling 816-931-3330 or in person at any Ticketmaster outlet throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.
