ALVA, Okla. – The Ranger baseball team kicked off the 2011 season with a split against NCAA Division II East Central. Northwestern took game one of the doubleheader played at Myers Stadium by a 6-1 margin, and fell in the nightcap, 3-0.
Northwestern scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as George Flores led the inning off and scored on a single by Juan Natal. The Tigers tied the game in the fifth inning, as they scored with two outs.
Northwestern came up big in the sixth inning, using five hits to score five runs. In that inning, Michael Ciombor started things off with a double, followed by an RBI triple from J.C. Aguayo. A Flores single scored Aguayo and Wade Schwerdtfeger found first base via a walk. Quinton Haynes hit a double off the right centerfield wall to score Flores and Schwerdtfeger and Jose Maysonet singled in Haynes for the final Ranger run.
Aguayo (1-0) picked up the win in the opener, pitching six innings. He had eight strikeouts, gave up five hits, all singles, and gave up an earned run.
Flores was the only Ranger with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a run batted in.
The Rangers couldn’t get the bats going in game two, as they could only muster two hits. Wade Schwerdtfeger’s single to right and Aguayo’s single to lead off the seventh inning was it for the Ranger offense.
Ben Dorman (0-1) took the loss on the hill, pitching 3.2 innings. He allowed three hits and an earned run while fanning one batter. Chase Phelps followed with 2.1 innings of work, striking out two batters and not allowing a hit. Zac Floyd pitched an out and Josh Swain threw the final two outs.
Northwestern (1-1) will host Graceland (Iowa) in doubleheader action on Saturday and Sunday. Both dates are scheduled with a 12 p.m. start.
