ALVA, Okla. – Northwestern’s softball team started off with a bang, defeating Oklahoma Panhandle State 15-6 and 14-3 to start the 2009 season off. The Rangers cranked out 29 hits against the NCAA Division II program, for a doubleheader sweep and first two victories of the season.
Game one lasted just five innings, due to the run-rule, as Northwestern had 12 base, including five extra base hits; four doubles and a home run. Dana Gandolfo, Kati Jo Gabaldon, Natalie Vasquez and Christina Mueller, all had doubles, while Tanya Parker homered to lead off the third inning.
Northwestern held an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning and six in the second inning.
Renea Tarwater (1-0) was responsible for the Rangers’ first win on the mound, as she went the distance and struck out four batters.
The Rangers had 14 hits in game two, with Therese Beeler leading the way with a 3-for-5 performance with two runs batted in. Ashley Vasquez was the other Ranger with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI’s.
Megan Lack threw four innings of unearned run ball and struck out one batter, before Amy Ramirez pitched the final two outs, striking out two.
The Ranger softball team (2-0) will play at the Cowtown Tournament in Ft. Worth, Tex. on Feb. 20-21. On Friday, Feb. 20, the Rangers play Texas Wesleyan at 10 a.m., Evangel (Mo.) at 1 p.m. and Missouri Valley at 3 p.m. After the teams are seeded, a tournament will take place on Saturday.
