More than 340 pieces of art are now on display in the J.W. Martin Library on the Northwestern-Alva campus for the 13th annual NWOSU Art Society Art Show. The show is open to the public through March 26 during the library’s normal operating hours.
The 13th annual Northwestern Oklahoma State University Art Society (NAS) Art Show is now open through March 26 in the J.W. Martin Library in Alva. The show is free and open to the public during the library’s normal operating hours. The library will be closed during Spring Break March 14-18 and will reopen March 20 at 1 p.m.
A wide variety of art is on display including paintings, drawings, photography and quilts from current students, employees, retired employees and alumni.
In the student area, Angelia Case, NAS sponsor, said that 36 total students have entered this year’s art show with 194 individual pieces within the three divisions of Visual Art, Photography and Artisan Crafts. Students will be awarded ribbons and cash prizes in each category.
The prizes are $15 for first place, $5 for second and $2 for third. The three division winners will each receive $50, and the Best of Show winner will receive $75. If all places in all categories are awarded, there is about $850 in prize money available to students.
“We have 26 students entered in the Visual Arts Division alone,” Case said. “This is something that I am incredibly excited about, and our club members are, too.”
There are eight current employees, one retired employee and three alumni who have entered in the non-student area with 148 individual pieces. The non-students will be awarded ribbons for their winning pieces.
Everyone entered in the art show will be eligible for the People’s Choice ribbon and $50 cash prize. The People’s Choice award is determined by those who view the art show and submit votes. Ballots are available near the display in the library.
Categories within the Visual Arts Division includes Cartoon/Comics, Digital Art, Drawing, Mixed Media, Painting, Watercolor and 3-Dimensional/Sculpture.
The Artisan Crafts Division includes Crochet/Knitting/Needlework, Quilts, Jewelry, Pottery and a Wildcard category for entries that don’t fit anywhere else in this division.
The Photography Division includes Action, Animals, Black and White, Cityscapes, Landscapes, Light, Elements of Design, Macro, Northwestern Campus Life, People, Plants and a Wildcard category for entries that don’t fit anywhere else in this division.
A Special Photography Category is "13.” This category was open to interpretation but the photographer was asked to depict the number 13 in some manner to help NAS celebrate the 13th annual art show.
At the close of the campus art show, all of the winning art entries will be on display at a community art show to take place in downtown Alva at the Runnymede Hotel on Friday, April 1, during the First Friday Art Walk activities, 6 to 8 p.m.
Non-winning art from the campus show may be picked up at the library on Monday, March 28, by 5:30 p.m.
Artwork from the community show at the Runnymede may be picked up at the end of that show at 8 p.m. or from Fine Arts 211 on Monday, April 4, by 5:30 p.m.
