SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Northwestern men’s basketball team came up empty handed in Shawnee after No. 24 Oklahoma Baptist got past the Rangers 68-56 on Monday night at the Noble Complex.
After leading by as much as eight points on early in the game, and not trailing for 17 minutes, Northwestern took a 30-26 lead into halftime.
The Bison tied the game at 35-35 at the 14:41 mark in the second quarter, but OBU went on a 19-3 run that spanned nearly eight minutes to take the commanding lead to the finish line.
The Rangers shot 32 percent and hit four three-pointers. Oklahoma Baptist was 41 percent on the night and hit just three treys. The difference in the game was OBU’s 31 points off of free throws, led by Brent Jones 21-of-22 from the line. Jones led the way for OBU with 33 points as Garrett Steinmetz followed with 11 points.
Brandon Brown hit 16 points, Termain Snyder had 12 points and Jason Rogers had 10. Northwestern was a dismal 8-of-21 from the charity stripe.
OBU had 38 defensive boards and the Rangers had 19 offense boards, while OBU out rebounded the Rangers 45-40. The Bison’s Charles Carter ripped down 16 boards, 13 on the defensive side and didn’t score a point. Brandon Dixon had nine rebounds for NWOSU.
Northwestern (6-5) will round out 2008 with an exhibition game on Dec. 30 at Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Tex. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
