Micah Mairs scored the Rangers (1-12, 1-5) final two goals to boost the Northwestern soccer team to its first victory of the season, defeating St. Gregory’s (3-9-1, 0-5) 4-2 at Ranger Field.
Northwestern controlled the ball for the majority of the game, taking 26 shots on the afternoon. The Rangers got off 10 shots in the opening period and shot 16 times in the second half.
Christina Nunez opened the scoring with her second goal of the season at the 11:48 mark on a Maristela Ramirez-Cibes assist, but the Cavaliers countered tying the game at half with a goal during the 29th minute.
Kelsey Burdick edged the Rangers to a 2-1 lead with an unassited goal during at the 46 minute mark, but again the Cavaliers knotted the game with a score during the 52nd minute.
Mairs two goals came during the 59th minute and the 68th minute to give the Rangers the hard-earned victory. Mairs first goal was unassisted and the later was assisted by Christina Nunez.
Dana Gandolfo recorded two saves on only four SGU shots on goal.
Thirty fouls were whistled, with SGU having 16 of them.
The Rangers will travel to Shawnee to take on Oklahoma Baptist at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23.
